Sarah's Sewing

Sarah's Sewing Located in historic downtown Goldsboro, NC. Sewing Lessons & Custom Sewing; slipcovers, up-cycling, repairs, mending, unique projects & more. Hi! in Goldsboro.

Don't hesitate to reach out! ✂️ Welcome to Sarah's Sewing, I'm Sarah. I offer group sewing classes and private lessons and also offer custom sewing at my shop on Ash st. I have over 20 years of experience sewing and working in fabric shops and 5 years teaching sewing. My favorite things to sew are clothes for myself and designing useful things to use around the house. I'm a military brat who grew

up playing outside a lot, doing arts and crafts and playing sports. My first job was at The Cloth Barn and they are who inspired me to get into sewing. I loved all the possibilities that their many fabric options offered. (At the time Cloth Barn offered apparel fabric, but no longer does). There, I worked with many seasoned seamstresses who became my sewing mentors. Between them and my mom's instructions I was off to a good start in becoming a proud seamstress or sewist, as I like to call myself. I took a little break from the sewing world In 2012 when I got a wild hair to hike the Appalachian Trail in it's entirety. After spending 6 months in the woods I moved to Kinston where I worked at Mother Earth Brewery and ran an Etsy shop selling my bag designs that I sewed. Then I got another wild hair and moved to Portland Oregon where I got a job at a boutique fabric shop that sold independent sewing patterns and the dreamiest apparel and quilting fabric. I helped run the shop, doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff and taught classes there too. I loved it but missed my family here in Goldsboro and decided to move back in 2019. I opened up Sarah's Sewing in the fall of 2019 with intentions of solely teaching classes but covid totally disrupted all that and that's why I started offering custom sewing. I also, of course, made a ton of face masks. It's been a struggle over the last several years but things are looking up and I'm super excited to be at your service for your custom sewing needs and as a teacher to all you future sewists out there.

One of two isles of fabric at Michaels here in Goldsboro the other day. I think I laughed out loud when I saw the caution signs for two bolts of "spilled" fabric. 😂 ✂️

This darling student of mine wants to start jazzing up basic t-shirts by adding fun sleeves and embellishments with a goal of selling them one day. ✨

How adorable is she in her revamped Panthers shirt that we fashioned together, using a sequin skirt for the sleeves!✂️

I have a particular student in mind who could really use some help affording a two hour lesson which costs $70. They are out of work, currently and so I thought, hmmm, perhaps there is a sewing angel ready to step in with a kind gift. ✂️

This student is such a sweet heart and I know they'd really appreciate the help. 🧵

Even if you donate just a portion to the lesson, it's still a big help. ❤️

This impressive quilt is a finished project made by a recent student of mine, Sam. Most of the balloons are made from onesies that her friends' daughter wore in her first few years. It's a birthday present for her, if I remember correctly.

Before coming to me for help, she had very little experience using a sewing machine but DID have a lot of hand sewing experience. That prior experience is part of what enabled her to accomplish the complex sewing of this quilt because with just a few lessons under her belt, it's true when I tell you, she sewed every bit of this quilt herself! No joke! 🧵 💪

Together we drafted the balloon and cloud shapes and then we played with placement for a pleasing composition.

She purchased some woven fabrics to add brighter colored balloons and hand appliquéd those on along with the baskets which are also woven fabric. The rest of the balloons and clouds are made using knit clothing and were zigzag stitched around the raw edge.

I presented several options for the quilting portion, one of which was to use the method of "echo quilting". As soon as I explained what it was she was decided! I think it was a good choice and adds fun texture and movement.

Not bad, at all, for someone's first quilt, wouldn't ya say!? ✂️ 😃

I have room for 2 more students in this upcoming class. If you have taken Intro to Sewing with me then Practical Sewing is a perfect next class to take. 🧵

And if you haven't then as long as you have some experience operating a sewing machine, winding a bobbin and threading a machine and know how to keep a somewhat even seam allowance 😅 then you may sign up! ✂️

The kiddos in last weeks sewing camp were a blast! They kept me very busy so, I didn't have time for many pics but did manage to take some the very last day. 🐠

They made appliqué fish pillows for the 'grand finale'! Also during the camp they made circle organizers and lined shoulder bags. 👜

The last camp which is next week is already full but if your kiddo wants to learn to sew I will be starting my Kids Sewing Mondays back up September 14th. I offer private lessons too!

Reach out if you'd like to know more, either here on FB or email me at: [email protected]

I just sent out Augusts newsletter, y'all! If you don't see the email in your primary inbox check your spam folder. 😅

Practical Sewing is being offered at the end of this month but it's still a good idea to sign up sooner than later since students will have to supply some fabric for the two projects in this class. ✂️

This class is a perfect next option for those of you who have take my Intro to Sewing Class (formerly known as Sewing 101) or for those who have some experience with threading/winding a bobbin and operating a sewing machine. 🧵

If you'd like to join the fun, email me and I'll get you all signed up: [email protected]

I had a group of 3 lovely students in my most recent Intro to Sewing class. They absolutely rocked their tote bag project! I had a special ikat fabric that I was wiling to part with and it worked up beautifully as a tote! 🧵

It's a shame the other student didn't want to be in the picture because her outfit was on point that night and her green tote, (modeled by another student) coordinated perfectly!

I always ask my students if they are okay with being in a group pic for Facebook and I do not get offended if they decline. Please don't think you have to be in a group pic if you take one of my classes! 😅

Anywho, all my students did a tremendous job and they are excited to come back for next month's Practical Sewing class which will be held the last week of August. If you have already taken my Intro class and haven't had a chance to make it to Practical Sewing, I hope you can make it to this one! ✂️

Just a bunch of nature gals participating in the Native Flora and Fauna show artist talk at The Wayne County Arts Council.

The art show is no longer up BUT some of the pieces are currently for sale at The Arts Councils' art market on Walnut st, in downtown Goldsboro.

Support your local artists, y'all! It's easy. It's as simple as attending local art openings and popups and experiencing the art work in person. You do not need to "be in the scene" or know how to talk art to appreciate it.

Compliment or ask an artist a question about their work and if a piece of art work really speaks to you and it's for sale, purchase it!

What would the world be without art and creativity? Dull, sad and boring, that's for certain.
