Currently reading! What are you reading this weekend?

The Count of Monte Cristo: this is the main event! I just finished the chapters for week 4 of our virtual book club. 🙌🏻 This book is wild!

How to Cheat your Own Death: I’m listening on audio. This is what I go to when I need a break from the count. I’ve been in the mood for a cozy mystery and this one is hitting the spot!

Created to Play: current non-fiction. I just started this morning, so it’s too early to form an opinion. But I’m really excited to keep going!

The Way of the Wilderking: Family read aloud. This is the last book in the trilogy and we can’t wait to see how it ends!

You could *maybe* convince me that Emma should end up with someone besides Islington. But otherwise, these bad boys are set in stone!

What’s a bookish hill that you would die on?

My TBR is giving serious Michael Scott vibes.

But did that stop me from buying books last night? No, it did not. 😅

Honestly, I’m just trying to save you some time. I would hate for you to waste your time on stories that are well written, powerful, beautiful, heartwarming, and all kinds of other lame things like that.

Save this post so you don’t accidentally read one of these, and then thank me later.

Title: From Crimson to White
Author: Natalie Brand
My Thoughts: I loved it!

Natalie Brand is a “new to me” author that I had the pleasure of meeting at TGCW last month. This is the first book of hers that I’ve read and I really enjoyed it.

Allow me to tell you why!

1. In Crimson to White, Natalie gives a complete gospel presentation. She doesn’t skip the hard parts. AKA: sin. You won’t appreciate a doctor prescribing medication if you don’t understand that you’re sick. And you won’t appreciate grace if you don’t understand that you are a sinner. Natalie spends a few chapters up front laying out why we need a savior. That is an essential part in grasping the beauty of the gospel.

2. I really appreciated the style of writing. She writes in a way that is clear, concise and accesible without watering anything down. She uses lots of examples to help bring her thoughts to life. Lots from the Bible and lots from other literature (which, hello, is perfect for this book lover). Plus she adds in some humor that makes it fell like you’re chatting with a friend.

3. This book transcends where you are in your faith. It would be a wonderful book to hand to a brand new believer to help them understand the gospel in a deeper way. But let’s be honest, even those of us that have been Christians for decades will never fully comprehend the grace we’ve been shown. I found this book to be packed full of reminders and beautiful truths even for believers who are farther along in their faith.

Clocking in at just over 100 pages, this little gem is a quick read full of the truths we all need reminded of. I highly recommend!

I received a this book from 10ofthose (US) in exchange for an honest review

Title: Off the Record
Author: Sara Goodman Confino
My Rating: I liked it!

I haven’t read anything by this author before, but this book was such a pleasant surprise!

Set in the 1950’s, Off the Record is about Judy. She is a recent college graduate who it determined to make it as a journalist at a time when women weren’t journalists. She catches a whiff of a lead and takes off after it in the hopes that it will be her big break into journalism.

I was expecting a light and fluffy romcom, but this offered a lot more than that! As Judy and her co-worker chase the lead, they find themselves in a world of government corruption and Cold War spies. This made for just the right mix of suspense, humor, and romance.

If you’ve enjoyed books by Carlie Walker, Ally Carter, or Elle Cosimano then I think you will like this one!

Content considerations: s*xism, a bit of anti-semitism, crude joking about s*x and extra-marital affairs (by side characters)

I recieved this book from Park Row Books and BookSparks as part of the Summer Reading Challenge.

Lately I have been needing more white space around reading. I’ve had a lot going on in my personal life and I’ve been working on some big projects for The Well Read Collective for later this year, and my brain feels tired.

So I’ve been doing some other hobbies away from books. Like watercoloring and sewing. And I’ve been enjoying some silence that I’m not filling with an audiobook.

It’s ok to not read all the time and do other things. It’s easy to feel like we need to read constantly to keep up and make more content and finish all those ARC’s we requested.

But sometimes we also need silence and white space. The books will still be there after.
