What I read in August!

I have to say, this month kicked my butt. I was sick for almost the whole month, one of my grandparents passed away, and we started our 9th year of homeschooling.

Between not having much time and my brain being complete mush, I didn’t finish many books. And I had trouble connecting with the ones I did finish. Here’s to hoping next month is better in so many ways!

What was your favorite book you read in August?

Coffee and Currently Reading! What are you reading this weekend?

A Summer of Stars: I’m only about 30 pages in, so I’m not hooked yet but I think I’m gonna like it!

Beneath the Swirling Sky: this is our current family read aloud. We’re all loving it and I’m getting lots of requests for “one more chapter”

Defiant Lights: current non-fiction. Just started yesterday afternoon but I’m excited to keep going.

Wormwood Abbey: current audiobook. I’m about 60% through. I’m having a hard time getting into it.

Title: The Good News Family Devotional
Authors: Michael and Melissa Kruger
My Rating: I recommend it!

We are currently working through this devotional as part of our family worship time and are really enjoying it!

The Format:
- Breaks the Gospel of Mark into 52 lessons, one a week for 52 weeks
- Devotional portion just for the parents
- Each lesson has a single “big idea” to focus on
- Questions for younger children and for older children.
- Family application questions.

How We’re Using It:
We have been using the devotional a bit differently because we will be using it about 4 times a week rather than once a week. We have been spending two days on each lesson.

Day 1: We read the passage from Mark, read and repeat the big idea, and then I read the parent reading out loud. Our kids are probably at the top end of the age range for this book, so they are learning a lot from the parent reading section.
Day 2: We read the passage again and discuss all the questions.

Then we move on to the next lesson for the next two days. This has been working really well for us and we’re getting a lot out of it!

I love that the book is laid out to fit any family. Since there are several different components to each lesson so that you can keep it super simple or make it a bit more involved for older kids. I definitely recommend it!

Thank you to Harvest House Publishers for the gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
