Dave Bartels started Blue Star sports more than 4 decades ago!
When he was a high school student at South Haven, MI, he never was able to run in his true school colors of purple and gold. Uniforms in those colors just did not exist.
Fast forward to the 80s and Dave dove deep into the current manufacturing process - it was now possible to make many more custom items in every color imaginable. Aha! Dave's dream of providing quality, affordable athletic apparel to high schools across the country could now become a reality.

Best thing about growing up in a family business?
For Blue Star owner Justine Burdette, it was all the nights around the family dinner table listening to her parents discuss the longer range plans for Blue Star. It was not till many years later that Justine realized that hearing these discussions gave her a leg up on how business worked, how to problem solve, and how to communicate one's ideas. Justine is using these skills every day!

Long before Justine became the second generation owner of Blue Star, she worked in the family business.
Justine vividly remembers licking and stuffing marketing mailers (thank you internet for making this job a thing of the past!), learning how to put large numbers in order by organizing POs, and later working in the printing and shipping department. The best job of course was getting to meet clients face to face at clinics across the country and play hooky from school (Just kidding, Anna and Dave still made Justine do her homework while traveling!).

Justine took the reins of ownership and management here at Blue Star in 2023 when she took over the company from her parents. Justine's journey with us is deeply rooted in her passion for running, a love she shares with her dad.
She brings a 20 year career in leadership, business, and strategic vision experience to Blue Star.
Our journey began in 1982 with pioneering American-made custom warm-ups and introducing our own line of uniforms.
Today, we continue leading the way in sportswear for sportswear for schools and organizations.
