Our Story

We are Mark and Emily Tobin, the (new) owners of Hopscotch, as of May 2017! Em came to Grand Rapids for college (Go Lakers!) from near Detroit, met me here, loved GR and never left. After years of working for large companies in marketing as a digital marketer (Emily) and a graphic designer (Mark), we were both ready for a new challenge. We had begun to discuss buying this store when the company we were both working for went out of business. What at first seemed like a set back became a huge opportunity as it pushed us to pursue our dream and gave us the time we needed to transition the store and bring in a huge amount of inventory.

We had often talked about going into business for ourselves, but never found the right fit. When we heard that the original owners of Hopscotch were selling their business, we decided that this was the perfect opportunity for us and our then six-month-old son to build a family business. Now, I run the store during the week while Emily splits time between managing the books and inventory for Hopscotch and working a full-time job in marketing. We like to joke that we have two babies now - our son and the store. It’s been challenging, but we're proud that we are building a business of our own.

At Hopscotch Children's Store, we specialize in products that are locally-made, educational and eco-friendly, including toys, games, books and gifts, as well as some baby gear like cloth diapers. We currently sell online and at our retail location and we strive to carry products that can't be found in the "big box" stores, including a lot of locally-made toys and baby items. One of the best parts of owning this store is the opportunity to hand select all of the products we carry so that we can be sure that we are sharing quality items with our customers at all times. We love celebrating and working with other companies that not only carry and produce great products, but that are eco-friendly, socially responsible and help others...that’s what it’s all about, right?
