Vintage fold-out color lithographed Rand McNally railroad map of the United States, drawn on a scale of 1:9,757,440.

It opens to 14" x 22" and the population data is from the 1940 census.

It was published by Fred Harvey.

On the reverse side there are illustrations of the insignia of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This original WW2 publication is in very good condition, with no rips, tears, or writing. It folds to 7" x 5½". Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.

The Fred Harvey restaurant chain offered servicemen and other railroad travelers a good place to eat when the train stopped to load and unload.

From the 1880s through World War Two, the Fred Harvey name was synonymous in America with good food, efficient service, and its popular young women waitresses.

Handsome 1976 guidebook to Bennington County and southwestern Vermont, printed more than 40 years ago.

This softcover book measures 9" x 6" and has 96 pages of text and photographs, with centerfold map by the National Survey of Chester.

It tells the history of the area and describes dozens of local landmarks and attractions.

This guidebook was published as part of the nation's celebration of America's Bicentennial 1776-1976, and the cover art features the "Bennington Flag," with 13 stars and 13 stripes, symbolic of the 13 American colonies, and a large "76" in the canton.

Handsome copper-plate engraved map of North America, in original hand color.

The coverage area extends from the Arctic Ocean to the Isthmus of Panama, including Central America, the West Indies, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with the Territory of Alaska.

There is excellent detail throughout, including Indian tribes, railroads, cities, towns, political boundaries, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief.

Legend keys inside the lower neat line identify the states in the Northeast U.S. and label the possessions of France, England, Spain, Holland, Denmark, and the United States.

The image area measures 27.6 x 37.7 cm [10¾" x 14¾"], and the map is titled in the upper margin: "Amerique Septentrionale."

It was drawn by Louis Edouard Desbuissons and engraved by Alexander Sengteller, with lettering by Isidore Dalmont. It was published by J. Migeon in "Géographie Universelle, Atlas Migeon," Paris, 1874, more than 150 years ago.

A vignette in the lower left quadrant is an illustration by Frederic Legrip of Niagara Falls, surrounded by what appear to be palm trees.

Large-format color-lithographed wall map with pictorial illustrations by R.L. McCollister, copyrighted by the School & Library Publishing Company, Sycamore, Illinois, and printed more than 50 years ago.

It is the top sheet in a set of three, with overall measurements of 81 x 56 cm [32" x 22"], and it is titled in a cartouche decorated with flags and eagle: "Historical Map of the United States."

McCollister's compelling artwork provides an overview of important events in our nation's history, with depictions of the Revolutionary War, Westward Expansion, and the Civil War, labeled as the War Between the States.

There are illustrations of the Landing of the Pilgrims, George Washington, Oregon Trail, Pony Express Rider, First Oil Well, Cumberland National Road, Battle of New Orleans, Discovery of Gold, Surrender of Chief Joseph, and hundreds more.

Above the map is an annotated list titled "Chronology of Important Events Since the Discovery of America," spanning the years from 1492 to 1971.

On the reverse side there's a map of Europe, drawn on a scale of 1:7,547,170 showing railroads and political boundaries.

There are two additional double-sided sheets, with maps of Eastern Asia, including Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines; the United States; Israel, Jordan, and Palestine, showing political divisions at the time of Christ; and a circular map of the World on a hemispheric projection, with portraits of American presidents from George Washington to Richard Nixon.

Condition: The three double-sided sheets are affixed to a metal bar at the top, with tabs for hanging. The overall condition of maps and hardware is very good, lightly used. There's scattered light spotting, minor edge tears, and a few tiny chips.

Original, leatherbound 1834 first U.S. edition of The History & Topography of the United States of North America, From the Earliest Period to the Present Time, by John Howard Hinton.

Two volumes bound as one, in full leather with ribbed spine and gilt-embossed lettering. It measures 11" x 9¾" x 3" thick, with 936 pages (428 + 508), plus a map of North America and 35 full-page engraved plates depicting American cities, landmarks, and significant events, as well as an engraved frontispiece and title page in each volume.

The title pages were drawn by William Croome, and each is inscribed "...Sold by Periodical Booksellers."

The book was published in Boston by Samuel Walker, with additions and corrections by Samuel Lorenzo Knapp.

The map locates cities, towns, forts, trading posts, and Indians, as well as rivers and lake. Lake Trimpanogos is labeled "doubtful." The southwestern U.S. is part of Mexico, and present-day Alaska is labeled Russian Territory.

Among the other engravings are Thomas Cole's "Lake George," Alexander Jackson Davis' "Harvard University," and John Trumbull's "Battle at Bunker's Hill." (The full list of engravings is in the "Directions for the Binder," image.)

It is dedicated to Washington Irving, Esq. "with admiration of his talents, high esteem for his character, and gratitude for his encouragement and aid in this undertaking."

Later works by John Howard Hinton include History of Baptism (1841) and Lectures on the Prophecies (1843). He died in New Orleans, during the yellow-fever epidemic of 1847...

Original 1855 first edition of Henry Herbert Brownell's "The New World: Embracing American History," published by Dayton and Wentworth, 86 Washington Street, Boston.

This book measures 10" x 7", with 916 pages of text and more than 30 brightly hand colored full-page illustrations, printed on one side. There are dozens more full-page illustrations, uncolored.

The book is more than three inches thick and consists of two volumes bound as one; each volume has its own title page, and there is a hand-colored frontispiece.

The text covers the discovery of North and South America, the founding of colonies, and the history of individual states, territories, and nations, up to the presidency of Franklin Pierce.

Author Henry Howard Brownell (1820–1872) was an American poet and historian. Following the publication of this book he served as private secretary to Rear Admiral David G. Farragut and was present at the naval battle in Mobile Bay. During the Civil War his poems attracted wide attention, and he was dubbed by Oliver Wendell Holmes "Our Battle Laureate."

Condition: The text block is intact and complete, with all pages present and in fine shape. Both front and rear covers of the book are detached, and the spine is missing. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.

Original 1894 antique color lithograph "Flags of All Nations," printed more than 130 years ago.

Prominently featured at the center is the 44-Star Flag of the United States of America. This flag had become the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1891, on the admission of Wyoming (July 10, 1890). It was to last for 5 years, until Utah joined the Union in 1896.

Among the other flags depicted are those of the Sandwich Islands, Kingdom of Siam, Cochin China, Ireland, Paraguay, Persia, Liberia, Mexico, the Society Islands, Morocco, Venezuela, Turkey, and Arabia.

Also shown are the Union Jack, Flag of the Secretary of the Navy, Danish Royal Standard, Papal Standard, Standard of the Germany Empire, Russian Standard, Swedish Royal Standard, Flag of the Emperor of Austria, and other flags, standards, and national emblems.

Handsome large-format fold-out 1976 Amoco road map of New York City, printed more than 50 years ago.

This map opens to a generous 42" x 25½" and has great detail on old street and highway alignments, with cartography by Rand McNally.

On one side there is a road map of Brooklyn, Queens, and western Long Island, including Garden City, Mineola, and Rockville Center.

On the other side there's a road map of Manhattan, the Bronx, and southern Westchester County, including Yonkers and New Rochelle.

This map was distributed by the Amoco Oil Company in 1976 and is dated in the legend. The code number in the legend is 5/76.

The map locates Amoco gas stations, and the front cover shows the Statue of Liberty and displays the American Revolutionary Bicentennial 1776-1976 logo.

Original 1856 antique engraving of the American Ball, held at the Grand Hôtel du Louvre in honor of George Washington's birthday more than 160 years ago.

The image area measures 23.5 x 34.3 cm [9¼" x 13½" and the engraving was published in the March 6, 1856 edition of "The Illustrated London News."

More than 800 guests attended the celebration, including U.S. minister to France John Young Mason and English diplomat George William Frederick Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon.

The Grand Hôtel du Louvre, designed by the architect Alfred Armand. had opened at 164-168, rue de Rivoli, Paris less than one year before this engraving was printed.
