Inspired by the unseen beauty of a piano, we created a piece of art with the hammers that connect to piano keys and strike strings to make music. We mounted them on a frame made also of reclaimed piano parts and finished with a layer of sheet music. This piece is a tribute to the beauty, design, and inner-workings that so often go unnoticed yet in many ways create what we know and love.

“Thriving in Chaos” is a poem that wrote about being a black man in America.

As soon as I read it, I wanted to see it - written with the lines of the poem like bars across a face, holding him back. We wanted to create this piece on wood so that it’s rings of time could speak to how long these systems have been hurting people, and we wanted to draw a face whose expression says, “Look at me. Don’t look away.”

This is what we came up with. “Thriving in Chaos”.
