Had a great retreat thus weekend featuring "Josephine's Knot." Everyone finished their quilt whether it was twin or king. Great job ladies! And I do believe that all of them are coming back in October for our annual murder mystery. If you have not reserved your space for the mystery, contact me soon...we are almost full!

March : Sparkling Star Blocks
These perky little stars will be used next to the log cabins. They begin with a square in a square technique and are finished with flying geese, the same size used in January. It is a lot of work, but I am sure you will be pleased with the finished star! Make 14.
Cutting:
Golds- 2- 2” strips x wof Subcut into 56 -2” sqs
Reds- 2-3 ½” strips x wof subcut into 14- 3 ½” sqs.
Cream- 3- 2” x wof subcut into 56- 2” sqs.
***Cream and Blue for star points- Using the method of your choice from January, make 56 flying geese 2 x 3 ½” . (Remember that Eleanor’s method makes 4 flying geese for each initial square set. )
Sewing:
Lay a red 3 ½” sq right side up. And a gold 2” square in the corner matching 2 outer edges of corners. Sew from corner to corner of the gold square on the diagonal. You may draw a line to stitch on if you are not confident that you can eyeball it. Trim the seam allowance to approximately ¼” and press seam open. Turn to the next corner and repeat. Do this until you have all four corners complete and you have a square in a square! Next make the flying geese in the manner you prefer from January. Last, sew a flying geese patch to opposite sides of the square in a square block. Press seams to the square in a square block. Add a 2” cream square to opposite sides of the remaining flying geese blocks. Press to the cream square. Now add these blocks to the remaining two sides of the square in a square/flying geese blocks, forming a sparkling star! Next month we will do an easy block…I promise! See you in April.

January: Small flying geese
My favorite way of making flying geese is the Quilt in A Day method. If you do not have their ruler, I would highly recommend you buy one and use it. I have tried many, many methods and Eleanor Burns has come up with the easiest and most accurate method in my opinion. When purchasing the ruler, you are looking for the ruler that makes both the 1 ½” x 3” (used now) and the 3” x 6” that you can use on another project. Her instructions that come with the ruler are very simple and quite clear. Once you use Eleanor’s method, I doubt that you will ever make them another way again! If you want to use an alternate method, here is another easy way to make flying geese.
Cutting: Tan/cream: 64-2” sqs Other colors a variety of: 32-2 x 3 ½” rectangles
Sewing: Place a 2 x 3 ½: rectangle right side up with a 2” square on one side. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner of the square. Sew on the line. Trim seam allowance to ¼” and press to triangle . Repeat with other corner and another 2” sq. Make 32 geese. Join geese together in 2 strips of 16 each. HAPPY QUILTING -SEE YOU NEXT MONTH
