Training doesn't stop when you make it off probation.
Every rep out here has a purpose.

The rookie's learning from the guy who's done this a thousand times. Somebody's testing a technique that might change how the crew does it next time. The engineer's running the drill so he knows exactly what his interior crew needs before they ever have to ask.

Nobody trains alone, even the one down on the ground.

That's the same reason a crew shows up in matching gear. It's not about looking the same. It's about being the same team, on the fireground and off duty.

Spent a shift with Greer Fire Department. Nothing about it was for the camera.

We got the real thing. Trucks getting checked. Downtime in the day room. Running calls. Crew workout. The stuff that never makes it into a recruitment video because nobody thinks to film it, but it's the stuff that actually builds a crew.

Thank you to Greer Fire Department for opening the door for a shift. Not every department does that, and we don't take it for granted.

In honor of National Dog Day, meet Marshal- a local firehouse pup.

Marshal has been on the job a few months and already thinks he runs the place.

He's sweet. He's feisty. He has exactly one speed.

Right now he's in training. Somewhere down the road he'll be the dog who walks into the bay after a bad one and sits down next to whoever needs him most.

That's not a small job.

Nobody feels like talking after a rough call. No one is raising their hand in the day room. But people will sit on the floor with a dog. And somewhere in there, the talking starts.

More departments are figuring out that taking care of your people doesn't always look like a mandated debrief. Sometimes it looks like a dog who doesn't need you to explain anything.

Marshal's got a lot of growing to do first. And a lot of boots to chew.

But he's already doing part of the job.

That's when you lock in. Adrenaline's already moving. You run the plan again in your head, your assignment, your crew's position, what you're walking into.

There's no such thing as perfect ex*****on. It doesn't exist. What exists is preparation. The reps you put in long before the tone ever dropped. Running your reps the same way every time until it's automatic.

Preparation doesn't make it perfect. It gets you as close as you're going to get.

Stay ready.
