Even thought Dixie Belle Paint doesn't require a topcoat, I usually use one. Which one I use depends on the finish and the effect I'm looking to achieve. Let's break things down....
Flat Clear coat is fantastic for that no shine distressed, farmhouse look. It is also great to use when you don't want you piece to look top coated. I recomment that you use at least 2 coats.
Satin Clear coat is what I use most often. It is wonderful when you are doing a nice pristine finish with minimal distressing. TIP: It also makes a great glaze if you mix it with DB paint.
Glossy clear coat gives a shiny sheen, but isn't as shiny as a lacquered finish. It works really well when mixed with other products as well.....such as pearlescent glaze.
Gator Hide is Dixie Belle's water repellent topcoat and sometimes people complain about the application of this product. Using a paint sprayer is a sure fire way to get a smooth, flawless finish. Most often, I apply with a damp sponge or brush. Dixie Belle offers special blue applicator sponges for Gator Hide, and they work very well. I keep them stocked next to the Gator Hide in both of my locations. I will say that long even strokes are the key, no back brushing, and several thin coats are better than one thick coat.
Use enough product, but not too much. TIP: When using Gator Hide over a dark color such as In The Navy, Caviar, Palmetto, etc. mix a small amount of your base paint color into the Gator Hide for a flawless top coat application.
With all of these topcoats, you can achieve a buttery smooth finish by lightly sanding with a 320 grain sandpaper between coats. This isn't necessary, but does make your finish smoother.
