is getting started!

Gracie brought this amazing dress to me last year and also shared her own before and afters.

The dress fit her very well to begin with. I added silicone lined elastic to the top edge of the dress. This is a nice little trick that helps strapless dresses stay in position better. She also requested that the deep-V be closed. It previously had a stiff wire form holding the V open so that was removed before the edges were sewn together.

While the front of the dress hem was the perfect length she also wanted the train reduced. By reducing the train I had extra fabric and I was able to cover her date’s tie with the excess fabric so he could match Gracie.

Before the year gets busy, I wanted to post a refresher on my communication policy and an update to my suggested timelines.

COMMUNICATION
I am only available by Facebook messenger on my Tailoring By Tiffany page or by email - [email protected].

I will never call or text you.

This allows me to stay organized and efficient.

Facebook (not me) requires you to like my page in order to send me a message. If you plan to send an image, try sending it as a separate, second message after sending some text first.

TIMING
I have suggested time frames for various types of projects.

• For repair items, especially small repairs I aim to have your items fixed within a week.

• For everyday clothing, I usually recommend seeing me about 2-3 weeks prior to needing your item back.

• For formal wear, I usually suggest seeing me about 4-8 weeks prior to needing your item back.

• For bridal alterations I suggest seeing me 3 months prior to your wedding at a minimum. If you need extensive alterations then I would suggest being seen even further in advance.

• For vintage wedding dress transformation projects I recommend 6 to 9 months in advance.

• For custom clothing design projects I recommend a minimum of 2 months in advance for smaller projects, with longer time frames needed for more complex projects.

As always, if you are wanting projects completed with shorter notice, that may be possible. Just send a message and ask!

UPDATED: Brianna shared pictures of her wearing the dress.
—————————-

Vintage wedding gown transformations are some of my favorite projects. Women bring dresses worn by their mothers and we work together to create something more modern. They often wear the items for getting ready, their rehearsal dinners, or even as reception dresses and more.

This vintage transformation project is from over a year ago so I do not remember all of the details, but this client wanted the original dress to become a robe she could wear while getting ready. The scalloped lace detail sleeve was a detail that I really loved and it was perfect to do similar for the baby gown and bonnet.

Most vintage wedding gowns and many more modern gowns have plenty of fabric to do at least one if not two items. It makes a really sentimental and sweet way to bring a treasured family heirloom into your own wedding in a way that reflects your own individuality as well.

These are projects I suggest starting 6 to 12 months in advance of when you expect to wear them but shorter time frames can be accommodated as well.

I would love to help you re-imagine a vintage dress into your new dream dress! Like my page and send me a message to get started today.

Has your winter work wear seen better days?

Zippers of all sorts wear out and need to be replaced. This pair of coveralls had a seized zipper on one pant leg. The zipper had also become completely detached from one side.

Not all zipper replacements are available as an exact copy of the original and sometimes a longer zipper needs to be reduced. These were needed quickly because of the weather so the replacement zipper ended up being a different color that had to be reduced to the current length. Exact match replacement would have meant waiting even longer.

this week features Sarah

Sarah found this beautiful dress for an amazing deal and fell in love with the dress. However you can see from her before pictures that the dress was at least two sizes too big for her so we worked together through a handful of fittings to turn the dress into a custom fit garment that she adored.

The straps of her dress were too long and needed multiple adjustments. The side seams were also adjusted to slim up the bodice. This showed us that the way the straps lined up in back was not as flattering as we would have liked. Ultimately the straps ended up repositioned closer to the middle of the back, beading adjusted to reflect the new positioning, and additional fabric similar to dance mesh was added behind the original straps for reinforcement. Repositioning the straps also meant extending them to the waist of the dress in back which helped support the weight of the dress as well.

Hemming the dress was of course needed. Like many brides, Sarah loved her train and only wanted the front hemmed while keeping all of the length in back. There were layers of plain fabric, tulle, mesh, horsehair, and of course lace. Each layer needed to be sculpted to create the new hemline. The lace layer had to be carefully cut to turn the decorative design into a trim that could be moved up the mesh and stitched into place. And then at the end her dress needed a bustle.

If you have your own photos to share from previous projects I have helped you with I would love to share them as well!

with Aliyah this week.

Her beautiful dress needed common alterations - strap adjustments and hemming all the layers while keeping the length of her train. Her boning was also upgraded so that the top of the dress felt more supportive. And a simple bustle was also added to the dress.

Whether you need common alterations or customization options it’s always best to book your initial wedding dress fitting with me 4 to 6 months prior to your wedding date. Make sure you have my page liked and send me a message today to setup your bridal or non-bridal fitting.

Coat season is here again 🥶. Did you grab last year's coat only to discover the zipper doesn't work? If you like the coat, you can just replace the zipper. Some can be repaired, but most should just be replaced when they split like this. Most winter coats fall in the $35 to $50 range for full replacement.

I haven’t posted for a while (…busy) so let’s try a Wedding Wednesday post. That’s a thing, right?

Jenni came to me with this beautiful dress, full of colorful embellishments. It’s been a little while so I will admit I do not remember all the details that we adjusted. Mainly the many layers needed hemming, while keeping the length of the train. The bodice originally had plastic boning and zipped in back so all boning was upgraded to spiral steel stays. The back of the bodice was also opened more and the zipper swapped for corset loops so that she could get a more customized look to her dress.

I cannot find any photos of the dress in its original state so enjoy some photos of Jenni’s wedding that were sent along from her photographer.

Wedding dresses are some of my favorite projects. Chelsea’s was unique. She had a dress that she used for her civil ceremony, but she wanted it to be redone into something even more special for her church ceremony.

We used the top portion of the dress from the original and attached a new skirt with a slightly more dramatic silhouette to give it an elegant feel. Boning throughout was also upgraded to spiral steel and the back was converted to a corset style closer. I also attached a bridal belt at the point where the bodice and skirt meet for a touch of bling.

As you can see Chelsea looked amazing and happy on her wedding day!
