We are closing out February with one last book by an incredible Black author in celebration of Black History Month! While February may be ending, that doesn’t mean we will stop celebrating Black history, because Black history is American history! It is so important to celebrate Black creators all year, to learn about Black history at every opportunity, and to listen to Black voices throughout the entire year!
We are closing out our series of featuring Black authors with the fantastic work of and her novel The 1619 Project. It is a series of multimedia journalism pieces that bring a different perspective to United States history than how it is typically understood. There is a particular focus on slavery, how this country was built upon it, and the consequences that extend from that. It is an absolutely essential work of literature to broaden one’s understanding of US history and how the country still suffers from its roots in slavery.
Nikole Hannah-Jones is a staff writer for the New York Times Magazine and has won the Pulitzer Prize for her book The 1619 Project. Her work centers on narrative journalism that brings forth struggles in Black American communities and racial inequality, focusing on telling the stories of Black people in America.
Thank you to everyone who has been keeping up with this short series of featuring Black authors, and we hope to see you in store to get these amazing pieces in your hands to read for yourselves!
