A Rustic Sphinx moth landed on my window this morning and then I found out it's National Moth Week. She knew.
Moths don't get the credit butterflies do, but they're pollinating powerhouses. This hawkmoth spent all night working flowers like a tiny hummingbird while the rest of us slept.
Here's the fun part. You can actually help scientists this week. Leave a porch light on tonight, snap photos of whoever shows up, and upload them to iNaturalist. Real researchers use that data to track moth populations. No experience needed, just a light and a little curiosity.

If you know me, you know I talk about zookeeping a lot. That's because I lived it. It's not something I read about. It's something I did with my whole heart.
National Zookeeper Week starts today, and I want you to hear this. If you're a keeper right now, if you used to be one, or if you're working toward becoming one, I see you.
I know what this field asks of you. The passion tax is real. Compassion fatigue is real. The early mornings, the losses that stay with you, the paycheck that never matches the work. You do it anyway because those animals matter to you. Today is for you.
That's why I've been making my keeper designs. Simple ones. I'm a keeper. I'm a trainer. Once a keeper. Love wildly. One animal silhouette with the words. A small way to carry what you do.

to everyone still in it. boots dirty before the sun is up. loving an animal more than you can explain to anyone outside those gates. coming home wrecked and going back the next day because they need you.

Happy National Zookeeper Week 🐾
Here's to the stuff that never makes the highlight reel.
Here's to the keeper who cried in their car after a loss and still showed up the next morning to feed breakfast on time.
Here's to the one who worked Christmas. And Thanksgiving. And their kid's birthday. Because animals don't know what day it is.
Here's to the keeper hosing the same wall for the thousandth time, knowing that clean space is love in its least glamorous form.
Here's to the one who spent years volunteering, interning, and working for free just to earn the right to work this hard.
Here's to the former keeper scrolling this week with a full heart and a little ache. You didn't stop being that person when you turned in your radio. The animals you loved were lucky to have you and I hope you know that never expires.
Here's to the kid at the fence right now, watching a keeper talk about an animal like it hung the moon. That was us once. That spark is how every single one of us got here.
And here's to the animals. The ones who taught us patience, humility, and how to love something that will never say it back in words. They say it in trust. That's better anyway.
If you're in uniform this week, I hope you get the pizza, the thank yous, and a moment where you remember why you started. If you've hung up the boots, I hope you look back proud. You gave your best. That was always enough.

Let me tell you about an animal I have such a soft spot for.
Bald head, hunched shoulders, sitting on a fence post next to some roadkill. You know the one. It's easy to look at a vulture and think, gross. But I'll defend them every chance I get.
They eat the stuff that would make almost anything else deathly sick. Their stomach acid has a pH of around 1, among the most acidic of any vertebrate, and it destroys many of the dangerous pathogens hiding in a rotting carcass. Diseases that could spread to other animals and people often stop with the vulture.
They're not gross. They're the reason things don't get gross.
We saw what happens without them in India. A veterinary painkiller given to cattle turned out to be deadly to the vultures feeding on their carcasses. White-rumped vultures went from one of the most common large birds of prey in the world to critically endangered, with populations crashing by more than 95%.
Without them, carcasses lingered. Feral dog populations grew. Rabies spread more easily. Researchers later estimated that losing those vultures was linked to around 500,000 excess human deaths in just a few years.
That's incredible when you think about it.
An animal most people never think twice about was quietly protecting all of us 🖤
