The global race to build massive artificial intelligence infrastructure is literally heating up the planet, creating localized "data heat island effects" that could impact hundreds of millions of people.
According to a working paper led by researchers from the University of Cambridge, land surface temperatures around AI data centers rise by an average of 2°C (3.6°F) after operations begin, with some regions recording spikes up to 9.1°C (16.4°F). This warming influence is not confined to the immediate vicinity; researchers detected elevated temperatures extending up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) away, creating microclimate zones that alter regional ecosystems and community welfare.
Driven by powerful computer chips running continuous calculations for large AI models, these hyperscale data centers generate immense thermal waste. With global data center electricity consumption projected to nearly double by 2030, scientists warn that this localized warming will worsen health outcomes, drive up residential cooling costs, and strain local energy grids. As tech giants build out massive facilities, this hidden environmental cost is shifting from a global carbon debate to a literal temperature emergency for the communities living in their shadow.
