Everyone spends their life chasing something.
Money.
Success.
Relationships.
Pleasure.
Power.
Recognition.
None of those things are evil. In fact, many are gifts from God.
The problem begins when we expect them to do what only God can do.
C.S. Lewis observed that history is filled with civilizations that pursued wealth, conquest, philosophy, technology, politics, or pleasure as the answer to the human condition—yet the human heart remained restless.
Two thousand years before Lewis, Jesus made the same point:
“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” (Mark 8:36)
Technology changes.
Governments change.
Cultures change.
But human nature doesn’t.
Lewis wasn’t merely making a philosophical observation.
He was describing the story of every human heart—including his own before he became a Christian.
