Shop update for you guys.
I really appreciate the incredible amount of support you guys show the page. Its been busy guys, the message inbox has been really jumping.

If you're looking to buy fur, I am not a retailer.

If you're looking for fur to be tanned, I'm about 6 months out on turn around times.

I really try to respond to all messages, if you dont hear from me, send another.

What started out 20 years ago as a kid who needed to know why his first raccoon skin didn't turn out the way he wanted it to, turned into reading everything he could, visiting all the local taxidermists within bicycle range, and experimenting with whatever he was able to get his hands on.

Over the years the obsession only grew. I wrote my process down as I went, documenting every single experiment, adding to it, and maybe more importantly, subtracting from it as I learned.

Now at 85 pages, in print and spiral bound, complete with a few pictures for reference, the most valuable thing about these notes goes beyond the recipes. It's understanding the process.

Seeing this in print is unreal. I am really excited to begin mailing these out next month. The support for bringing this project about has been absolutely incredible, and I am humbled by the sheer numbers interested in the sign-up form - over 100 copies already spoken for!

If you'd like to get yours earlier, come see me at the Minnesota Trappers Association Convention!

Thank you!

PS. PDF versions will be available as well.

We will be at the Minnesota Trappers Association Convention this month!

We'll have a booth setup, and will be doing a demo, come check us out!

I will be able to intake skins for tanning on a limited basis. Please reach out ahead of time to make arrangements.

They need to be appropriately fleshed and either air dried, or salt dried, and bug free, all license and tagging requirements apply.

Hypotonic pickle solutions for rehydrating.

Let chemistry do the work.

Per gallon of water: 1/2lb salt, pH 1.5-2, rehydrator of choice (I use Pro1 Ateson LPW), starting with warm (80-90 degree) water helps too.

DO NOT EXCEED 8 HOURS IN THE SOLUTION, RETURN TO A FULL SALINITY PICKLE.

Skins that fail to rehydrate within appropriate time frames due to poor fleshing, grease burn, or freezer burn can benefit from this.

Use caution as you are introducing acid swell.
Decreasing the salt content allows the acid to pull much more water into the skin.

I had a very serious conversation with my shop expert about acid choices in pickling. Here's basically what he told me...

This may be controversial, but let's hear what you have to say.

What is the best acid for pickling and tanning uses?

Almost every tanner I have ever met has an opinion on this.
Does the acid you choose actually matter? Or as long as you maintain the correct pH and salt concentrations, are they all doing the same things?

So don’t just tell me your favorite, tell me why it's your choice.

Pickling, easy to do, complex in its function. Here's a one minute breakdown of its most important functions.

Enjoy!
