Red Hill General Store

Red Hill General Store Not many authentic general stores are left-- but the thrill & experience of visiting Red Hill in Hillsville is an old fashioned delight.

We will never claim to be a perfect company, but we will address difficult issues and strive to be honest about our ability or inability to resolve them. Responsible product supply, labeling and distribution infrastructure is an ongoing social challenge. We hand-pick products with trusted standards we've learned over time. We encourage product manufacturers to reduce product impact and uphold qual

ity and affordability. While we want you to always choose to purchase from us because you love our products, we want you to feel good about where it's from. Our customer service, shipping department, and retail store team members earn good wages for workers in the United States; which is in sharp contrast to the 20 cents per hour wages of call centers and internet shipping business abroad. Operating retail stores responsibly in America requires risk taking and long-term investment. The industry's relentless and blind pursuit of the lowest possible wages cannot be sustained over time. Moreover, providing markets for local commodities is critical to thriving communities. There is satisfaction in being an independently owned and operated small business which uses local resources sustainably, employs workers at decent wages and meaningfully serves community citizens. Whether you live nearby or are just passing through we invite you to stop by our store in Hillsville, VA. Throughout our stores you’ll find name brands you know and love. We are authorized dealers of, WR Case knives, All American Canners, Rada knives, Presto cookers and canners, White Mountain, Jelly Belly jelly beans, and more. But even if you do not live nearby, you can still enjoy a Red Hill experience online at: http://redhillgeneralstore.com

Here’s the thing about summer around here…

You can either fight the bugs all season… or get smarter than them.

We’ve been talking a lot lately about some of our favorite bug solutions at the store because honestly, they’re just plain interesting.

There’s Zevo On-Body, which uses IR3535® — an ingredient inspired by a naturally occurring amino acid. No DEET, no harsh chemical smell, no greasy feeling. Just solid protection against mosquitoes and ticks for up to 8 hours. A lot of folks like it because it’s designed to target bugs, not everything else around you.

Then there’s Tick Tape, which might be one of the simplest ideas we’ve ever seen. It’s double-sided sticky tape you wrap around the tops of your boots or socks before heading into the woods or tall grass. Ticks, chiggers, and fleas can’t crawl past it — they just get stuck. No poison. No chemicals. Just tape doing its job.

And of course, good old Neem Oil — used for thousands of years as a natural insect repellent and still going strong with folks looking for a more natural option outdoors.

Funny how some of the best ideas are either incredibly old… or incredibly simple.

We’ve got all three and more here at the store if you want to check them out before the mosquitoes decide you’re their next meal.

Nobody sat in a rocking chair to scroll their phone. They sat there to think, talk, and watch the road.

The front porch rocking chair is one of the oldest American traditions we still actually keep. In Appalachian communities like ours, the porch wasn't decorative — it was where you did life. Shelled beans. Watched storms roll in off the ridge. Told stories after supper.

The first decorative garden flags showed up in American yards sometime in the 1970s — a quiet little tradition that said “we celebrate here.” And truth is, that porch was usually where you saw them first.

Long before HOA rules and Pinterest boards, families marked the Fourth with whatever they had: hand-painted signs, bunting made from old dress fabric, a coffee can of sparklers on the porch rail.

This red-white-and-blue bead garland draped over a weathered old rocker? That’s not just decoration. That’s a statement: we still live that way. Simple wooden beads and felt stars — the kind of thing you’d hang up and leave out all summer.

And this red-white-and-blue firecracker flag is $9.99 and comes in July 4th ready. But the tradition it represents? That’s been in your family longer than you remember.

We’ve got ’em in stock — come pick one up before they’re gone.

There’s just something about a clothesline…

Sun on your back, a little breeze rolling through, and a line full of clean laundry snapping in the wind. Smells better than anything you’ll get out of a dryer.

We’ve got two styles of Ben-Mor Clothesline Kits in stock — simple, sturdy, and ready to put up without a lot of fuss. The kind of setup folks have been using for generations.

No electricity.
No noise.
Just fresh air and sunshine doing what they’ve always done.

If you’re trying to save a little on the power bill, or just like doing things the old way, this setup is hard to beat.

You can stop by the store and pick one up, or order online here: https://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/housewares/laundry/Ben-Mor-Clothesline-Kit.htm

There's a right way and a wrong way to fly the American flag. Most people don't know the difference.

Valley Forge Flag Co. has been making American flags since 1882 — over 140 years, right here in the USA. Their name comes from the place where Washington's army camped through the winter of 1777–78, when the men literally froze and starved to hold the line.

There's a reason this company picked that name. Flying a flag that's faded, frayed, or installed wrong is a quiet kind of disrespect — not the kind anyone intends, just the kind that happens when you don't know better. We carry their full line: 4'x6' sewn nylon flags, mounting brackets, solar flagpole lights, rotating rings that keep it from wrapping the pole. Everything you need to do it properly. Made in America, built to last.

Your mailbox is the first thing people see.

Here's a little piece of history: the roadside mailbox became standard in rural America after the Rural Free Delivery Act of 1896 — before that, farm families drove to town just to get their mail.

That little metal box out at the end of your lane has stood through a lot. Show it some love this summer. This decorative mailbox cover from Evergreen slips right over your existing box — no tools, no hardware, just snap it on. Mason jars, daisies, poppies, stars. It's $14.99 and looks like something your great-aunt would've stitched by hand........ Mailboxes, Mailbox posts, and mailbox covers in stock!

👉 Tag someone whose mailbox needs a little TLC this summer.

Your grandma had this on her kitchen table. You just didn't know what it was called.

Oilcloth — wipe-clean, waterproof, printed fabric on a roll — was a staple of American farmhouse kitchens from the late 1800s well into the 1960s.

Before plastics got cheap and disposable became fashionable, families used oilcloth because it *lasted*. You wiped it down, you rolled it up, you used it again next Sunday. It came in bold patterns: strawberries, florals, polka dots, gingham. Sound familiar?

We sell it by the yard, cut right here in the store. Perfect for picnic tables, potting benches, shelf liner, kids' craft tables. The red-and-blue stars print? That's your July 4th picnic table, sorted. At just $9.99/yard

👉 What pattern did your family have? Gingham? Cherries? Florals? Tell us in the comments.

The folks over at The New York Times put together a gift guide for folks who actually like cleaning — and right there in the mix was that little tin we’ve had sitting on our shelves for years…

Old Craftsman’s White Ring Remover.

And not only that — they mentioned us as the place to find it.

Now if you’ve never used it, here’s the thing…

This isn’t some big fancy cleaner. It’s just a small 1/2 oz tin that works like “first aid for your furniture.”

Left a coffee cup on the table too long?
Water ring from a vase?
That cloudy white mark that won’t go away?

A little bit of this, a soft cloth, and a gentle rub — and most of the time, it disappears.

A few things folks like about it:
• Made right here in the USA
• Been around for years — one of those “if you know, you know” kind of products
• Works on those everyday accidents we’ve all had at least once

It’s funny… the kind of thing you don’t think much about until you need it.
Then suddenly, it’s the most useful thing in the house.

If you saw the article and came looking — we’ve got it.

And if you didn’t… well, now you’ve got a little trick up your sleeve for the next time someone forgets a coaster 😉

For those who love nothing more than a sparkling home and a well-scrubbed surface, we have gifts to make cleaning easier, more fun, and loads more stylish.
