The rain follows after the forest
As we know, fresh, clean water is an irreplaceable resource. This ʻōlelo noʻeau speaks of how our fresh water supply depends on the health of our native forests. Our native trees, especially keystone species like Koa, act as a sponge to capture rain water, which in turn feeds our aquifers. The health of ʻĀina is fundamental to our well being.

“Puna of the fragrant bowers of Hala (Pandanus)”
The moku of Puna on the East side of Hawai’i is renowned for it’s abundant groves of Hala.
In the olden days, people would thatch their homes with hala branches to bring the fragrance indoors and there are stories of travelers who knew they were nearing Puna because the fragrance was so distinct. This is a common ‘ōlelo no’eau that speaks of Puna, but it allows us to connect to place by recalling our stories and commemorating our relationship with our living environment.
