Sig Zane Designs

Sig Zane Designs Honor the land and native culture. Celebrate excellence and beauty. And share what we know. The energy from Hawaii Island feeds my spirit.

The elements of nature shape my character. The archaic chants of our elders guide the traditions and practices. The rhythm of the universe dictates the flow of time. The honoring and respect of the ancestors that stand at the back of me directs the action. I am a steward of their knowledge. My art is a tangible visual form of their story.

KALOHĀLUʻA

Patterns incised on kapa beaters are called hāluʻa and further described as koʻeau hāluʻa, hāluʻa niho manō, hāluʻa makaʻupena. These terms hint to the intent of the design. The rows of kalo on this fabric design is a study of the loʻi and the method of planting huli. As the plants mature, this is a view of that healthy growth. In making kapa, the wooden beaters are created for a variety of functions. The halu’a beaters not only spread the bark thinner, but the design emboss and lock the layers together. The name of the design translates to Kalo Patterns.

ʻAPE ʻELUKŪ

I remember the ʻape growing near the ocean, with Piʻilanihale in view. Growing in the shade of a great Kamani tree, I was taken by the darkness of the leaves. Oversized, upright, and almost looking mutant, the ʻape had such a pronounced presence that it commanded attention.

I have always liked ʻape. The glossy leaves are a powerful statement in the wild growing in the darker understory. I have heard that they used to eat the root during famine. I prefer to use the leaves as an umbrella in sudden downpours.

ʻApe ʻElukū Button Up in Hunter Green, Raffia & Sand.

Loulu

The Loulu is the only native palm found in Hawaiʻi.  Dried fronds were collected, stripped, and woven into beautiful pāpale.  Narrow strips, often only 1/16” wide, are woven into hats, valued for their handicraft and natural shine.  Handed down through generations, these woven hats are very valuable because of the intricate work involved.

Kani Ka Lei

Kūpeʻe shells add to the percussion in hula.  Strung into lei for ankles and wrists, each step and movement syncopates, adding depth to the experience.  Before threading into lei, each shell is placed in “position.”  Sizing and placement is important to create a balanced lei of shells.  Of course, the colors of the shell add to the aesthetics.  The name, Kani Ka Lei, refers to the sounds of the shells when we dance.

During the lowest tides and the darkest moon, the shell emerges out of the sand and feeds on the exposed rocks. Depending on the colors of the surrounding sand and rocks, the markings are often unique to place.

Kūhaʻo explains, “...at the moment we tie on the kūpeʻe, the spirit is ignited!”
