Scam Alert: USPS Never Charges for Re-delivery

Somehow, we missed a shipment and then received an email directing us to schedule re-delivery with a benign charge of $1.99. We paid the fee since the email appeared legit.

We then tracked the shipment after paying, but discovered USPS never attempted delivery in the first place, and our product was still on its way.

The situation stunk even more once we received another email asking us to pay $1.99 again. We went to the post office and spoke to the postmaster. It was a scam.

When consulting with the postmaster, he told us he’s encountered this scheme before.
He explained that the email requesting $1.99 was a phishing operation targeting credit card data. Scammers tricked us, but fortunately, we found out before criminals used our credit.

Moral of the story: The post office never charges for re-delivery.

Realize these scams evolve. The post worker told us this was the first time he saw this scam use an accurate tracking number. Most of these scams send bogus numbers and act fast, draining your credit before you can react. In addition, the postmaster located our parcel in the “Return to Sender” pile. This mix up perplexed even him.

We speculate a postal worker may have orchestrated this crime. I am unsure if USPS will investigate this incident, but the best defense is knowledge. Stay vigilant. Digital pirates are among us.
