Did you know…?

History of the birthstone can be traced back to biblical times and the book of Exodus. Beginning with the Breastplate of Aaron— a priestly breast plate adorned with 12 gemstones each representing one of the 12 tribes of Israel— early Christians collected all 12 gemstones to wear at the same time believing in the powers or protection held by each stone. This evolves to wearing one of the 12 stones a month. Eventually leading to the modern tradition of— one gemstone to represent each birth month.

August— Peridot

Things to know and fun facts:

The word Peridot comes from the Arabic word “faridat” meaning gem. Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine. The vibrant lime green to olive color is caused by iron present during the formation process. As most gems form in the Earth’s crust, Peridot forms deep in the Earth’s mantle carried to the surface in volcanic eruptions. Some samples of the stone arrive via Extraterrestrial origins. Iron rich meteorites can contain these samples. Peridot symbolizes growth, prosperity, healing, and emotional balance. This stone is often given for the 16th wedding anniversary.

Color- Lime green to shades of olive green

Top Sources- China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, United States, and certain exotic locations such as Peridot Beach, Hawaii. The oldest recorded sources came from mines as old as 1500 BC, in Zabargad Islands (Topazios) in the Red Sea by ancient Egyptians.

Durability- Ranks a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness; softer than most gems; not recommended for daily wear

Care- Clean your stone with warm soapy water, and a soft brush if needed. NO Ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners. The stone is vulnerable to thermal shock. Store your Peridot jewelry separate from other jewelry to avoid scratching the gemstone.

Cultural Significance-Ancient Egyptians called the stone “gem of the sun”, and believed peridots protected the wearer from nightmares and evil spirits. In the Hawaiian culture, peridots were viewed as tears of Pele — the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire. Medieval practitioners powdered the stone to treat asthma, reduce stress, and restore inner peace.
