On June 24, 2026, Venezuela experienced something that even seismologists rarely see.
A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck first.
Then, just 39 seconds later, a second earthquake measuring 7.5 hit.
This rare event is called a seismic doublet.
Normally, a large earthquake is followed by much smaller aftershocks.
Instead, Venezuela was hit by two major earthquakes almost back-to-back.
Scientists believe the first earthquake transferred stress to a nearby fault, triggering the second rupture before the ground had even stopped shaking.
Because the two ruptures occurred so close together, some experts think the shaking reached certain areas from different rupture directions and reinforced the motion, increasing damage in places such as Caracas. Researchers are still studying exactly how much this contributed.
Both earthquakes occurred along the boundary where the Caribbean Plate slides past the South American Plate, one of the most active fault systems in northern South America.
