Not only are Doug Ford’s “basket-weaving” comments dismissive of those who are getting degrees in the arts, but they are also offensive and disrespectful towards an important piece of Indigenous culture.
Spencer Lunham Jr., of the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, has been making traditional baskets for more than three decades. Speaking on Ford’s comments, he told CBC London: “It’s actually disrespectful to the people that live it every day... It’s a beautiful art and it’s also a part of our culture. I think, as Native people, we’ve lost enough.”
