In 1776, the men who signed the Declaration of Independence weren't celebrated as heroes.
They were branded as traitors.
To King George III, the Founding Fathers had committed TREASON-- the highest crime against one's country; punishable by death.
History tells a different story.
Freedom has rarely been granted by those in power. More often, it begins when ordinary people refuse to accept tyranny. As John Locke argued, when a government abandons its duty to protect the natural rights of life, liberty, and property, the people have not only the right—but the responsibility—to resist.
Yesterday's treason became today's independence.
This Fourth of July, we celebrate the courage to stand for liberty, even when doing so carries the ultimate cost.
Because freedom isn't inherited.
It's earned.
