I created this coloring book with a simple hope that the more our keiki learn about the world around them, the more they’ll grow to love it. 🎨

From the honu swimming in our ocean to the manu in our trees, the butterflies in our gardens, and the foods that bring us together, Hawaiʻi is full of things worth knowing, appreciating, and protecting. I wanted to create something that makes learning about Hawaiʻi fun and approachable, a way for keiki to explore our natural environment and culture, learn ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, and discover something new with every page.

Because I believe that when we understand the place we call home, we can build a deeper connection to it. And when we care about something, we’re more likely to protect it…not just for ourselves, but for the generations who come after us. 🌱That’s the heart behind Lulani Lane and our motto: Educate. Perpetuate. Propagate.

Unlike 99% of other spiders, these incredible mamas continue caring for their babies long after they hatch! They catch and wrap up food for their spiderlings for 40 to 💯 days, until they’re ready to hunt on their own.

Meet the Hawaiian happy-face spider, or nananana makakiʻi, a tiny spider found only in Hawaiʻi! These mamas fiercely protect their eggs and may even adopt orphaned spiderlings.

So maybe it’s true… Hawaiʻi moms really are built different. 🤙😉

🦇🎃 Spooky season is here, so let’s talk about Hawaiʻi’s ONLY native land mammal: the ʻōpeʻapeʻa, aka the Hawaiian hoary bat!

These little guys flew over 2,000 miles of ocean to reach Hawaiʻi over 10,000 years ago and evolved into a species found nowhere else on Earth. 🤯 But did you know they’re also endangered?

From how they arrived in the islands to why they’re at risk today, here are a few facts about one of Hawaiʻi’s most unique native animals.

It really pains me to see what’s been happening to our coconut trees. 🌴💔

I hate complaining about something without actually trying to learn more or do something about it, so I did some digging on coconut rhinoceros beetles (CRB) and wanted to share what I found.

In the video, I talk about what CRB are, how they damage our palms, what we can do to help, treatment options, and what to do if you find one.

One thing I didn’t get into: those black traps you see around. They’re mainly used to detect and monitor CRB populations, they’re not a magic solution for getting rid of them, but they help researchers and response teams figure out where the beetles are. 🤷‍♀️

Oʻahu has been dealing with CRB since 2013, but there’s still hope for the neighbor islands. If you live on one and find a CRB, please capture it and report it to CRB Response.

I’m definitely not an expert, just someone who can’t imagine home without our coconut trees. But I do have hope that if we all learn more and do our part, we can help protect them.

On a recent trip to London, I wanted to visit some of the places 📍our ali‘i did on their travels to England. 🇬🇧

From Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace to the British Museum, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Claridge’s, the aliʻi really visited so many places!

👑Queen Kapiʻolani and Princess Liliʻuokalani came to London in 1887 for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, but they weren’t the first Hawaiian royals to make the journey. Kamehameha II and Queen Kamāmalu came in 1824, Queen Emma in 1865, and King Kalākaua in 1881.

Walking through these places, I kept trying to put myself in their shoes, imagining what it must have been like to travel this far at a time when the world was so much less connected.

There was no Google to show you what a place looked like or what to expect. You just arrived and experienced it all for the first time.

But I think that’s what struck me most is that our aliʻi weren’t simply tourists. Their travels were connected to diplomacy, relationships, education, and learning from the world around them, and bringing that knowledge back home to Hawaiʻi.

Getting to walk through some of the same places they once stood was such a privilege and made me appreciate them in a completely different way.

During my recent trip to ʻEnelani (England) I visited the British Museum and to my surprise found pieces of home!

From an ʻawa bowl made from kou wood, pearl shell, and boar tusks, to some poi pounders, ʻulu maika stones, and a massive kiʻi of Kū… it was surreal seeing pieces of Hawaiian history and culture so far from home.

But it also left me thinking about how much of Hawaiʻi’s material culture is now held far from Hawaiʻi in museums, private collections, or places where access can be limited to kānaka ʻōiwi. 😔

I’m grateful that these pieces have been preserved and that people around the world can learn from them and be exposed to a little bit of Hawaiʻi at the British Museum (which is free to visit btw 😊).

This beautiful orange flower might be one of Hawaiʻi’s most underrated lei flowers, but kou has a fascinating history that goes far beyond its flowers.
🌊Traditionally considered a canoe plant, kou was believed to have been brought to Hawaiʻi by early Polynesian voyagers. But ancient kou seeds discovered on Kauaʻi dating back about 5,000 years suggest that kou may actually be native to Hawaiʻi.
🥣Native Hawaiians also valued kou for its versatile wood, which was used to make ʻumeke, cups, and other tools, while its leaves could be used to dye kapa and fishing lines. And, of course, its vibrant orange pua have long been used to make lei. 🌺

Witness any acts of aloha during 🌀Lala??? During times of disaster, things can feel really heavy. But sometimes, it’s the little acts of kindness that become the silver linings…reminders that aloha is still very much alive.

Why is mountain apple called ʻōhiʻa ʻai? 🍎🌺
If you’ve ever seen the flowers of an ʻōhiʻa ʻai tree, you might notice they look a lot like our native ʻōhiʻa lehua. But the name actually tells us something about the fruit: ʻai means “to eat,” so ʻōhiʻa ʻai can be understood as “ʻōhiʻa that is eaten.”
ʻŌhiʻa ʻai, also known as Hawaiian mountain apple, is considered a canoe plant believed to have been brought to Hawaiʻi by early Polynesian voyagers.
The fruit is crisp, juicy, and refreshing, with a flavor that some describe as floral or slightly apple-like. 🍎
I love learning how Hawaiian names can reveal connections between plants, language, food, and the people who have cared for them.
