The Story Behind the Design:

The ‘ulu (breadfruit) is a pillar of Hawaiian food security, brought across the Pacific by early Hawaiians as a vital food starch and “canoe plant.” Its prolific canopy oers more than shade; a single tree can provide hundreds of pounds of nutritious fruit for decades. ‘Ulu today represents a path toward island resilience. By fostering community groves, Hawaii strengthens its self-reliance, ensuring this generous tree continues to nourish both the land and its people.

This print and colorway combination was created for the Hawai‘i ‘Ulu Co-op. Founded in 2016 by nine small-scale farmers, this co-op is a producer-owned social enterprise committed to revitalizing ‘ulu (breadfruit) as a viable crop and dietary staple. Farmers are empowered as changemakers in Hawai‘i’s food system. The Co-op has grown organically over the years to become the foremost breadfruit farmer organization in Hawai’i and the United States, representing over 220 family farmers across the islands of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu. Together these farmers oer consistent, high quality products that are delicious, versatile, healthy, accessible and sustainable.

The co-op is committed to the revival of ‘ulu to strengthen Hawai‘i’s food security and to the value of mālama ‘āina – care or protection of the earth – by using environmentally responsible production methods. This thriving cooperative sustains and uplifts producers, consumers and society as a whole. Farmer owned, ‘āina grown.
