Old schoolers have a distinct advantage when it comes to fly fishing and especially when it’s related to fly fishing for trout with a bamboo fly rod! Bamboo fly rods are the quintessential fly rod for trout, of any size and proportions, even powerful Atlantic salmon! Today’s supercharged graphite rods are fun to cast, especially long distances of over 60’ but once you realize the fish are mostly 1-20’ from the bank its that silky smooth and delicate presentation that will catch that wily old trout, especially with a perfectly placed roll cast when in tight quarters!
The River Dog Fly Shop just landed a quiver of gently used Orvis Bamboo fly rods from a tiny 6.5’ 2oz 2wt to a powerful 9’ 8wt! We also have a good selection of vintage Hardy fly reels; Princess, Lightweight, Featherweight and a highly sought after Hardy St. George! Come and check them all out!!

Another successful return from the Leaf River Arctic Adventure for our group of Houghton Fly Fishing Club members and their guests! This year‘s August trip proved to be more challenging as to the percentages of fish hooked vs landed! The average size of Atlantic salmon and Arctic char hooked were more in the tackle busting spool emptying category than of the pan fry size variety!
Weather was amazing, clear and sunny reaching the high 70’s! The aurora borealis was in full view to those few of us that managed to stay awake till midnight! We had only a couple of cooler nights that required our camp furnaces to be on.
Leaf River has the world’s highest tides making it a little difficult to know where to park your boat!

River Dog Fly Angler Profile:

My name is Danny Wallington, I am here in Houghton for the summer playing on the Genesee Rapids. I love the beautiful area and been having amazing opportunities to go fish the awesome streams in NY with the help of the crew at the River Dog Fly Shop! Attached are pics from my last evenings trip to the Upper Genesee

Join and help out with the TU/DEC for their Trout Stream Sampling next week:

Wednesday July 8th - Clear Creek (Arcade). Meet at 9:15am at the Steel and O’Brien factory (formally FoamEx). Please use the South entrance labelled “Trucks” which will be on the right side of the building as you are looking at it. We will be parking in the back right when you get behind the building, out of the way of any truck activity. We will be doing an afternoon site after lunch. Please note we will be doing a Hot Dog lunch this day at the Arcade Village Park. If you are planning to participate this day, please let us know!

Two weeks before Father’s Day, June 21! Fly Fishing is the perfect sport, its not just about catching fish, it’s about freeing your mind and spirit, being one with nature! Solving a puzzle and out guessing a wily trout! The study of basic entomology proves helpful but blind luck is all one really needs! After all you have to be in the right place at the right time and thats not lying on a couch nor relaxing in your easy chair! Get your fathers out of the house with some basic fly fishing equipment and some free casting lessons or just a membership in the Houghton Fly Fishing Club! The beautiful Genesee river is one of WNY premier trout streams and a great place to start one’s fly fishing journey! Photos courtesy of HFFC member Ryan Fontaine!

Take advantage of the great fishing!
Stream reports by Jim McCarrick:
“Fished East koy today (Friday, June 5 near Gainsville. Temp at 9:30 was 61. Caddis on the water, also saw a few iso's. Not many risers to start but a few trout actively nymphing along the bottom. Saw a few BWO's come off, switched from elk hair caddis to a #20 bwo BH nymph on a 6x tippet. Fished it upstream with soft twitches as it came back, stopped counting at 12 fish. Had a very large one get off right at the net was able to bring a 17 incher to net. If you're going to fish East koy carry a supply of black, tan and green caddis as well as bwo nymphs, emergers, and duns #16 - 22. The caddis and bwo's are ever present on this stream. A small box of midges and you'll have the stream covered. If you head out in the evening and fish till dark, have some light cahills with you. You can get any of these flies at the River Dog Fly Shop.”
Tom McCormick:
Fished the Wiscoy yesterday (Tuesday, June2-3-6:00 PM. It was awesome… caddis and mayflies were taking them. Best fish was a 16 1/2 inch brown- right under the bridge in Wiscoy.
Charlie Love:
Caught this nice brown in the Genny at the mouth of Rushford lake outlet swinging a large tube fly in high and dirty water last week of May after a heavy rain!
