Fabulous Friday to you at the end of this first full week of Women’s Herstory Month. It’s been a busy several weeks so we’re happy to be back on social and get caught up.

Wednesday was International Women’s Day, and women are very important in cannabis history. We like to celebrate incredible women over the millennia known to be associated with the plant. Thank you Nola Evangelista for doing the research and being a resource with your Tokin’ Women book.

We also love that co-founder Kimberly got to spend International Women’s Day at Houston City Hall as part of the UNA’s annual celebration on March 8th. Fantastic event, and Kimberly got to sport our sister company Primas scarves as a skirt for the event. Additionally, she’s recently presented to some cool Rotary clubs lately, but that will be a separate post, so stay tuned.

Next week Kimberly is off to Austin to join the annual at the State Capitol. Looking forward to reporting back to y’all on how that goes. As of today, there are more than two dozen bills or joint resolutions filed pertaining to either Medical Cannabis, Decriminalization/Penalty Reduction or Legalization and today’s the deadline for filing. Will be an interesting session.

We are so grateful for the role you play in our work, even if we don’t get to see you face to face as often. It’s 2023 and that means it is a Legislative Year here in TX!!!

Thank you for always keeping us informed on the current bills proposed for the TX Legislative Session. 2023 marks the 88th TX Session and there are several bills to read about and connect with your elected officials on to make your voice heard.

There are three types of bills:

🪴🩺 Expansion of Medical Cannabis (TX Compassionate Use Program or T-CUP)
🪴⚖️ Decriminalization/Penalty Reduction
🪴👍🏽 Legalization

All three are important, and each has a different focus. If you’re not already receiving the TX NORML action alerts, please go to their website and sign up for those to stay up to date on current bills. Bill filing deadline is in March, so there’s also still time for more bills to be filed that we’ll want to track for committee debate and voting, sign up for those alerts today to stay in the know.

It’s not just enough to get out there and VOTE. It is as equally important to be an informed and involved citizen who communicates their wishes to their elected officials. If they hear from enough of us, they cannot ignore what the majority of their constituents request. You may not be on the same page politically as your elected official, but they still need to hear what is important to you, from you. Whether you prefer to write letters or show up in person at the TX Capitol, your voice needs to be heard.

Guests are welcome, and it’s a great way to not only learn more about this subject but also Rotary.
