This is Lupita shaping a Gus hat. She has been with SunBody Hats for 15 years and is responsible for many of the finishing touches that bring each hat to completion. Her favorite part of the process is working on the lacing and hatbands, where she adds the final details that give each hat its character.



Lupita has also spent the past 15 years shaping hats by hand. When asked about shaping the Gus hat, she explained that it takes patience — making sure the hat is perfectly centered, the eye indentations are balanced, and the pencil roll on the brim is formed just right.



She hopes that when customers receive a hat shaped by her, they feel satisfied and that the hat feels perfect from the moment they put it on.

Although she shapes many hats in the same style, Lupita says each one is unique in its own way — because every hat is made and shaped by hand.

It struck me the other day as sweat was running into my eyes. I didn't know if anyone ever told you how your hats hold up...

This one pictured here has some age on it. It started out when I had a custom leather shop back on the last ranch (12,500 acres) I rode for back in Colorado.

I bought a bunch then to sell along with the Holster rigs and other pieces I built for Cowboy Action Shoots.

I don't remember the exact year, '97 or 98' maybe? Only thing I do know is I was still on that ranch and didn't leave there until 2000... so... this particular Palm leaf is 25+ years old.

Worn it every summer since then trading out for felt in the fall. Soaking the crown to cool my brain pan on hot days... Shading my skull building fence.

Now finally it's showing its age. There's a split that's come along in the brim and a hole in the crown. Not bad at all! Seems like maybe people might think one is expensive... not if you figure it on how it becomes an old friend!

Just wanted the folks building these to know they do good work.
