www.amirtaghi.com Up and coming fashion designer Amir Taghi began drawing as a young child and quickly developed an interest in clothing.

As the drawings were transformed from paper to fabric, Houston’s fashion circle began to take notice. Known for his classic yet trendy fashions, Taghi aspires to make his name known in the national fashion circuit. The young designer continues to work on his line as he attends Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas. He was chosen as one of the fifteen designers for the Speak Against Silence Fashion Show as well as the Contemporary Arts Museum Fashion Show. Amir is currently working on his Spring and Summer 2013 line.

When I began thinking about our Spring Summer presentation, I knew I didn’t want it to simply be models standing along a wall. I wanted it to feel like a party, the kind my parents used to throw, or one of Halston’s soirées at his home in New York. I kept thinking about Julianne Moore in Tom Ford’s A Single Man, the elegance, intimacy, and quiet sensuality of that world. Casa Valle had the feeling of stepping into someone’s home, which made it the perfect setting for the world I wanted to create.

Music has always been an important part of my process, so I worked with Maison Sonor to create a soundtrack that completed the mood. I wanted it to feel as though you had walked into a party sometime in the 1970s. The needle dropping onto a record, the crackle of vinyl, fragments of conversation moving quietly through the room, and songs flowing into one another as if someone were changing records throughout the evening. Joan Baez and Persian music lived alongside one another, creating something nostalgic that never belonged to just one place. I wanted the sound to feel lived in and imperfect, like music already playing when you walked through the door.

Our Spring / Summer 2027 Presentation

I began working on this collection during a particularly painful moment for Iranians around the world. As the war began, I found myself thinking about the Iran I had always assumed would be there, the gardens I grew up in, the palaces and homes I had visited, and the art and architecture I had always dreamed of one day showing my friends. I returned to a Qashqai Kilim I had found folded among the thousands of rugs my grandfather brought with him to America in the 1990s. We sent it to Gentili Mosconi in Como, where it was transformed into a woven fabric, and later worked with Marsil in India to reinterpret the same motif as a rough cut embroidery.

The cracked frescoes of Rakib Khan’s Mansion in Isfahan, found through fragments of images on Instagram, were reconstructed as a print. Photographs I had taken of the flowers in my grandfather’s garden in Fasham became another print and a crêpon embroidered with apple green crystals, bugle beads, and sequins, while the extraordinary excess of Qajar court dress became a cropped jacket covered in raw stones, buttons, and found objects. Throughout the collection, memories, photographs, and objects were transformed through craft into something physical again, a way of holding onto the Iran I remember and sharing the beauty of a place that has given me so much.

Feeling overwhelmed with gratitude. Couldn’t do it without my one-of-one team. Thank you thank you thank you. Couldn’t do it without it out you. It’s a celebration for all of us.
