Staying cozy here in Texas under a thick, wool blanket that my grandparents got on one of their trips to Ireland. My grandfather knew he had Irish heritage, so on one of their trips, they opened the phone book and looked up their last name. Teskey. They found MANY Teskeys and started calling them. Lo and behold, they found some cousins. They became good friends with those cousins who made many trips to Texas to visit, and even considered moving here to start a potato farm. The Irish government wouldn’t allow the bank to release their money to purchase the land, so they stayed in Ireland. I was in elementary school at the time and remember their accent being so strong and hard to understand! One day, I will repeat my grandparents’ steps with a trip to Ireland to meet some cousins. Until then, I have this “rug” to remind me of the story and future resolution.❤️☘️

IMAGINE…this property with nothing on it. No buildings, no trees, no piers, NO LAKE. Just pasture. That’s how it looked when my grandparents bought it in 1979. They planted over 100 pine trees, crepe myrtles, rose bushes, and orchards. The Sabine River Authority said Lake Fork would rise to fill part of their land and marked the property. So, my grandfather built 4 piers on dry land with no water in sight. The locals called him Noah. “That’s fine,” he said. He had a faith they didn’t. A vision given to him that he believed would come to pass. They began construction on the buildings while the water rose. Over time, it rose to the exact markers, and the piers were perfectly placed. Little by little, it grew into the Blue Barn Christian Retreat and fulfilled their vision. For the next 40 years, it changed and enriched thousands of lives. And it started with just a little faith.

May your year ahead be filled with faith, hope, and persistence towards your dreams.

Merry Christmas! Dallas 1970s. Opal on the bottom left, sitting next to her sister, Hope. My grandfather looks to be in his flannel pajamas. And my mom, dad, and me are right out of the 70s. Check out my dad’s denim trousers and turtle neck, my mom’s stripes, and my collar and bowl cut (thanks, Mom). And can we please appreciate the mustaches.👏They wore them well. It’s hard to see the glass ornaments on the tree, but I take great pride in being their current keeper.

Happy first night of Hanukkah to all of my Jewish friends. Lighting my grandmother’s menorah that I found after she died two years ago. She wasn’t Jewish, but she had Jewish friends and respected their traditions. I think I’ve finally got the candle lighting order down..right to left, light left to right. I think. As one friend says, God has bigger things to worry about, so I need not fret over it.
