A Moment in the Journey | 2021

When the world changed, creativity found another way.

As part of the UH Hispanic Alumni Network (UH HAN) Virtual Charity Fashion Show benefiting student scholarships, we brought together fashion, poetry, dance and art — featuring Houston’s 5th Poet Laureate outspokenbean — for a presentation created during COVID, an unforgettable moment in history.

One of the most unique chapters in 10 years of Diverscity — where creativity, culture and community came together for a purpose.

🐝 NEW RELEASE — SWARM CITY BOXY FOOTBALL JERSEY

Houston has built a defensive identity around speed, physicality, pursuit and all 11 finding the ball.

That energy inspired SWARM CITY — celebrating the mentality taking over Houston football.

Hakeem Olajuwon Didn't Dominate an Ordinary Center. He Dominated David Robinson.

When people say, "No modern big man could guard Hakeem Olajuwon," they're not saying it because of nostalgia.

They're saying it because they've seen what he did to one of the greatest defensive centers in NBA history.

That center was David Robinson.

The Admiral wasn't some slow-footed giant.

He stood 7-foot-1, weighed around 250 pounds, owned a 7-foot-5 wingspan, and combined elite strength with incredible speed.

He could run the floor like a forward.

Jump like a power forward.

Protect the rim like few players ever have.

He won Defensive Player of the Year, led the league in blocks, captured an MVP award, and remains one of the greatest defensive big men the NBA has ever produced.

Then he met Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1995 Western Conference Finals.

What followed became one of the greatest displays of one-on-one post play basketball has ever seen.

Hakeem didn't overpower Robinson.

He outthought him.

One possession it was a Dream Shake.

The next it was a spin baseline.

Then came the up-and-under.

The fadeaway.

The quick face-up drive.

Every move looked different.

Every counter came before Robinson could react.

Despite Robinson's size, athleticism, and defensive brilliance, Hakeem seemed to know exactly where his defender would be before he got there.

It wasn't just skill.

It was basketball artistry.

Even after Robinson had just been named the league's MVP, Hakeem averaged 35.3 points in the series while leading Houston past San Antonio.

Many fans still consider it the greatest offensive performance ever delivered by a center against an elite defender.

That's why so many former players believe Hakeem would thrive in any era.

Today's centers are bigger.

Some are stronger.

Some shoot better.

But very few possess the combination of lateral quickness, defensive instincts, length, and discipline that David Robinson brought every single night.

If Hakeem could consistently create clean looks against The Admiral, it's hard to imagine many modern centers slowing him down.

Perhaps Giannis Antetokounmpo, with his extraordinary length, mobility, and defensive versatility, would have the best chance.

But even then...

Guarding Hakeem Olajuwon wasn't about matching his size.

It was about surviving a master who always seemed to be one move ahead.

Some players had unstoppable moves.

Hakeem had an unstoppable imagination. 🏀
