Does RFID skimming really happen? Yes, and it needs no contact. Every contactless card answers a reader at 13.56 MHz, and a reader can be hidden in a bag or held inches from your pocket in a crowd. There is no bump and no pickpocket - the card simply responds when energized.

What it is not: a way to drain your account instantly. Tokenization means a skimmed number usually cannot be spent directly. What a skimmer can do is read and log the signal your card emits, which is why blocking the signal at the source matters.
