My zeal for training reached a fever pitch following my conversation with Casey Viator, and that year I placed tenth in the Mr. America competition. I was pleased with my showing.

But soon after that, I seriously injured my right shoulder in a freak accident and was forced to stop training altogether.

My rampant enthusiasm reversed itself and left me in a deep depression. Having all but forgotten my dreams of becoming a top bodybuilder, I trained only intermittently for the next few years.

Then, I began to compound my mistakes. I reasoned that if three hours a day wasn't enough time in the gym them I would spend four, five, or even more hours if necessary.

Luckily for me, there just weren't enough hours in the day, or enough energy in my body to handle the full-time air force job and full-time workouts.

And I began to think that if developing a Mr. America physique meant giving up my entire social life, and a third of my waking hours, it might not be worth the effort.

But I was told that was the way it was, that it was natural, supposed to happen. I believed, but somehow it didn't seem right to me. And that was the first time I consciously remember thinking that just because a guy has a twenty-inch arm doesn't necessarily means he knows what he's talking about.

Later I was to discover that in some cases there is an inverse relationship between the size of the bicep and the size of the brain.

Still, it wasn't until four years later, when I was in the Air Force, that I began to seriously question my training practices. By that time, I was up to at least eighteen hours a week, and nothing discernable was happening except that I felt tired all the time.

And I'm not afraid to admit that I liked it. In some ways bodybuilders are like pool players who only feel really comfortable under the spft glow of the green-shaded lights in the pool-room with their pals around them. The gym is like that. It's a home with a big family.

The sounds, the sweat, the joking, the lavish approval, and encouragement of workout buddies, make a comfortable milieu that nurtures the weight trainer, constantly reassuring him of his strength, vigor, health, and beauty. I was so caught up in the scene that I hardly noticed that my muscular gains had slowed down considerably. I certainly did not connect it with my marathon training methods.

As is the case with most discoveries I arrived at the Mentzer Method (Heavy Duty) through trial and error. I made many mistakes in my quest for the perfect physique, mistakes that held me back, but they were mistakes that taught me a great deal about physical fitness, how to attain it, and how to keep it. I will help you avoid making the same errors I made.

But equally as important as the victory, the title, and the perfect score was the deep sense of satisfaction that I felt because the Mr. Universe title finally gave credibility to my radically new and highly controversial training and dieting philosophy (Heavy Duty), a philosophy that stresses short, high-intensity workouts coupled with a sensible, well-balanced diet.

I know that everyone of the other contestants in the Mr. Universe contest that year trained six days a week, at least two hours a day, and that many of them trained four hours a day. That's twenty-four hours a week. The equivalent of three full days of work.

In sharp contrast, my training session then (and now) rarely exceeded thirty minutes, three times a week, a grand total of less than two hours a week in the gym, roughly one tenth as long as my competitors.

It wasn't until several hours later, after I had had some time to reflect on the events of the day, all the planning and all the training that led up to the moment, that the full significance of what had happened, the reality of my triumph began to register.

Not only had I won the Mr. Universe title, the most prestigious crown in all amateur bodybuilding, but I had received a perfect score as well. Even the great Arnold Schwarzenegger never received a perfect score in international competition.

Pandemonium. I am a jumble of sensation. I feel a tremendous surge of great strength and, at the same time a little light-headed. I hear the crowd of 2,700 erupt in cheers and the chant of "Ment-zer, Ment-zer" as it builds in the back of the auditorium and breaks like a wave towards the stage. After all the years of work, the discipline, the sweat, I've reached the top of the amateur bodybuilding world.

In the flurry of back slapping and hand shaking that followed the announcement of my victory over ninety of the greatest Bodybuilders in the world, I bounced around in a happy daze, somewhat disoriented, not yet realizing I had just fulfilled a lifetime dream. Winning the Mr. America title had been very exciting, but nothing like this.

Its November 20, 1978. The setting is the lavish Centro de Convenciones Acapulco. Oscar State, secretary of the Judging Committee of Intentional Federation of Bodybuilders, is at the microphone.

The enthusiastic and noisy crowd has finally quieted down in anticipation of State's announcement. There is tension in the air, and I'm aware of a tingling sensation all over my body. The moment everyone everyone has been waiting for is here.

"Ladies and gentlemen. The winner, with a perfect score of 300 points, the first perfect score ever awarded in the history of international bodybuilding competition, the new Mr. Universe, Mike Mentzer of the United States!"

HAPPY 72nd BIRTHDAY, MIKE!

Please join in and celebrate November 15th in honor of Mike’s birthday. Mike would of been 72 years old today.

"Notice how they’ll accept anything except a man who stands alone. They recognize him at once . . . . There’s a special, insidious kind of hatred for him. They forgive criminals. They admire dictators. Crime and violence are a tie. A form of mutual dependence. They need ties. They’ve got to force their miserable little personalities on every single person they meet. The independent man kills them—because they don’t exist within him, and that’s the only form of existence they know. Notice the malignant kind of resentment against any idea that propounds independence. Notice the malice toward an independent man."

If I were to represent a workout as a living entity made up of a certain basic elements, the rep would be the most basic element of all.

Each group of reps constitutes a set. The workout itself is the sum of all the sets. But the individual rep is the basis upon which the whole is built.

In that sense, it's analogous to a single cell in a living organism.

The only thing I have left to study are the derivatives—aspects of exercise that are based on and derived from an understanding of the fundamentals.

Namely, the importance of range of motion, speed of rep and things like that. All those things are important but only in the context of understanding and properly employing the fundamentals.
