Nearly 1 in 10 Americans intentionally avoid looking in mirrors entirely.

I see this in my studio all the time. Women who have quietly stopped looking because looking stopped feeling good. And almost always, the reason has nothing to do with their bodies.

I wrote about it today, and about a young bride who came in this week and told me something I will not forget.

If you have ever stood in a fitting room and felt like the problem was you, this one is for you.

Why Clothes Don't Fit Women - And Why It's Not Your Body

Why clothes don't fit women has nothing to do with your body. A fit specialist explains the real problem, and what changes when fit is right.

This is the kind of project that's been filling my studio lately.

A bride bought a dress with straps. She wants strapless. So I'm building a corset and draping silk onto the front of it to replace the entire bodice. It's taking more time and more problem-solving than I originally planned, and it won't be finished for another month or so. But it's going to be beautiful.

Last month I built an entire interior corset for another bride. Laced up on the inside, buttons closing over it on the outside, holding everything exactly in place through multiple fittings until it was right.

This is just what happens here.
And I want you to know: this level of care is not something I save for bridal work. Every piece that comes into my studio gets this same attention. Whether it's a wedding gown or a pair of jeans you've been avoiding for years because something just isn't right about the fit.

If you have a closet full of clothes that almost work, that's exactly what my Closet Consultation is for. We go through what you own, I tell you what's worth refining and what isn't, and we make a plan.

Can I be honest with you for a second?

My body has changed over the last two years. And standing here in skirts that gap at the waist and a dress that no longer sits right — I am making a point I have made for 40 years.

Just because you can get it on doesn't mean it fits.
It doesn't matter whether your body has changed because you lost weight, gained weight, had a baby, gone through menopause, or simply lived your life. Clothes that fit the body you have right now are not a luxury. They are what let you walk into a room and feel like yourself.

Think of 3 to 5 pieces hanging in your closet. Things you wear anyway. Things you want to wear but can't quite bring yourself to. Write one of them in the comments — I want to hear it.

If you are ready to stop settling, my Closet Consultation service is a good place to start. Three tiers, all with an alterations credit included. Details in the link in my bio.

I'm finishing up the lace hem on this wedding gown today, the last step after more than 8 hours of alterations including some significant bodice changes.

I love this part of my job. Bridal, mother of the bride, bridesmaids, I love being part of people's biggest days. But here's what I keep thinking about: we'll give a wedding dress 8 hours of careful work, and then go home and wear clothes every day that might only need 20 minutes of the same kind of attention, except we never give it to them.

Your body isn't the problem. Most clothing was never built to fit real bodies in the first place.

You don't need hours and you don't need a big budget.

Sometimes 20 minutes is enough to stop settling for close enough.

Think about the three things in your closet that you rarely wear but can't seem to get rid of. I'd love to help you turn them into favorites.

Message me 810-333-0099 and let's talk about how I can help you.

Katie just posted this about me in one of the Michigan bride groups and it made my whole day.

"I can not say enough about Beth! Such a delight and she put in the work to make my dress hold up my chest. Fully built an inner corset that didn't give up even once all day. HIGHLY recommend. I'll miss you Beth!"

I'm Beth Smith, and I've been doing bridal alterations out of my studio in Howell for over 40 years. Wedding gowns are one of my favorite thing to work on. There is nothing quite like watching a bride see herself in a dress that finally fits her body perfectly.

I create a fitting experience where every body is welcomed exactly as it is. If you're a bride who wants her dress to feel like it was made for her, I'd love to work with you.

I'm looking for women who want to stand out. Women who aren't afraid to take charge, to take up space, to walk into a room and be noticed.

If that's you, I'd love to work with you.

Behind the scenes at Beth Smith Couture, this is what goes into creating clothing that actually fits your body and your personality. Quality craftsmanship matters.

Here is something I want every woman to hear: stop hating your body for not fitting your clothes.

Ready-to-wear clothing is made to a standardized fit that works for a very small slice of the population. The rest of us have been trying to squeeze ourselves into a system that was never designed with us in mind.

I created a free guide called Why Your Clothes Don't Fit and What to Do About It. If you have ever walked out of a dressing room feeling defeated, this guide is for you. You can get it through the link in my bio.

Coach Rogue 20, made to order. I do not usually do unboxings, but some things earn the exception.
In March I went to New York City with my daughter and sister-in-law. Visiting the Coach flagship and ordering a made-to-order Rogue was the one thing on my list I knew I had to do. The experience was everything I hoped it would be, and now it is finally here.
If you have questions about the made-to-order process, the options, or what the flagship experience is like, ask me in the comments.

If you want to only buy 100% natural fibers, you need to own an iron. Linen wrinkles. Cotton wrinkles. Silk wrinkles. That is the trade-off, and it is a real one.

Natural fibers also require more thought in the laundry room. Water temperature, agitation, drying method, and storage all matter more than they do with synthetics.

A small percentage of synthetic fiber in a blend significantly improves wrinkle recovery without sacrificing the feel or breathability most people are actually after.

Know what you are buying and what it will cost you in care before you make the purchase.

An electrician will not give you a price over the phone. A plumber will not give you a price over the phone. Neither will I.
Alterations are not a one-size-fits-all service. Sometimes what you think needs to happen can actually be solved a simpler, less expensive way once I see you in the garment. Sometimes there is more going on than you realized. I cannot know until I see it.
What I can promise is this. At the end of your fitting you get a firm price. You decide right then whether you want to move forward. No guessing, no surprises.
That is what it looks like to work with someone who actually knows what they are doing.
