My head was full of thoughts. My Diner companion told me he started talking to Carla after he graduated from college. Carla spoke of me frequently and said she and I had stayed in touch. She told him we talked every day. He said she thought of me as a second mom and even babysat for me sometimes. I didn't know what to say. There were things he knew that she told him that would be impossible to know unless someone knew me and talked to me regularly. I'm not one to post regularly or at all on social media....

He cleared his throat. Suddenly, everything was still. "I would see the guy, and my wife would find pieces of the dog. Finally, one night when he appeared again, I shouted at him, 'What do you want?' He laughed and said, 'I want you squid.' Then he crumbled away." I scrunched my face and leaned my head to the side, "Squid?" I asked. He smiled and shook his head, "Yeah. "I was really freaked out," he said. "I made an anonymous call to the police. Later, I saw a blurb in the student newspaper that said they were canine teeth." He blew air out of his teeth, leaned back, and looked out the window. "All through my sophomore year of college, he would show up at random times. I never knew when he would show up. Sometimes I would go without seeing him for so long that I thought this was all over." As he continued with his story, he started to get more agitated....

Someone dropped something in the diner, and we both jumped. I looked at him, and we laughed. We were both so tense. "We need to shake it out," I said, and we both rolled our shoulders and our heads and wiggled our arms. "Wow," he said. "I forgot about the 'shake it out,' you would tell us to do that all the time. He met his wife at college, they had one child, and were still happily married. I asked him about the girl, whom I have decided to name Carla, whose funeral we just attended. "Yeah," he said. It was gray and cloudy on the day of the funeral. Like God was setting the theme for the day. Dan and I had gone to the viewing at the funeral home the day before. I have not had many people close to me who have died, but I remember when I was very young, a woman in our church had passed away. My mother took my sisters and I to her viewing. There were a lot of people there just sitting in chairs in front of the casket. Occasionally, one would go up and say something....

Journal Entry Thursday May 14, 2026 Why would she remember me? Or even have vengeance for something so silly? She was a teenager still in school then, when she passed she was 33, that's a long time to hold a grudge. The restaurant wasn't even open anymore. Still she was the only person I knew even vaguely who had recently passed away. I put the address of the funeral home in my phone. Dan and I were going to this funeral. We could at least rule her out for revenge. Also maybe we could find out if she had all her parts....

I told my theory to Dan. That the man is grass and mud and leaves from our backyard. That I think the reason we haven't seen him again is because it has been so rainy outside. He wondered why someone we knew would make a protection against us, and I honestly didn't know but what if we had made the creature? Maybe one of us had subconsciously called him up from the ground because we knew someone from our past had come back to make our lives miserable. I couldn't think of anyone but I did check online for missing person reports, there weren't any thank god....

I am waiting for the man to show up again. It's been five days since he left the beating heart in my yard. I'm starting to think maybe this is over. Maybe we can get back to normal and this will just be a blip in our lives we can move on from and eventually forget about. I still don't know what I'm going to do when he comes back. Because even though it's been five days I still think, no I know, he is coming back. There's been a lot of rain and I wonder if maybe that's why, maybe he is the same as that story I read....
