How to Style a Modern Hawaiian Shirt

1. Bolder Prints and Graphics
Your rule for summer: The more flamboyant the print, the better. This season’s statement garment can’t be too modest, so it’s best to go all out.

What’s out there? A boundless assortment of choices. Of course, you can start traditional, with florals, palm leaves, or repeating island and surfer graphics.

Even within these classic parameters, however, brands have tried out neon shades, layered on the yellows, oranges, and pinks, or opted for psychedelic combinations.

For full starkness, a two-tone silhouette print removes any potential grey areas.
However, in terms of prints, there’s a whole world beyond of retooled options. Thus, in place of florals, consider pineapples – really, they’re everywhere this season. Replace those palm fronds with bamboo leaves.

And, if you’re not fond of standard surf prints, go with a pattern reminiscent of a souvenir jacket – particularly carps or koi.

2. How Your Hawaiian Shirt Should Fit
After you’ve gotten your prints in gear – and truth be told, you can’t have just one – think about how you’ll wear the shirt. Building on its reemergence, the Hawaiian shirt projects a more refined silhouette this time around.

As such, veer away from the tourist trap: A baggy, draped fit paired with knee-length shorts and Velcro strap sandals. And, unless you’re attempting a strictly retro look, it’s best to leave the pop culture influences in the past.
Particularly, a contemporary Hawaiian print shirt should stand out on its own, rather than be layered over a tank top or white T-shirt.

As a starting place, examine the fit. If it’s too loose, the shirt becomes reminiscent of a muumuu. Rather, keep it slim and structured – a straight fit to the hips, ideally with a straight or vented hem that can be worn out or tucked in with ease.
Secondly, consider the material. Older shirts featured a light rayon or polyester construction. While it felt effortless, understand that the material traps perspiration, and on a hot day, those sweat stains show up in no time at all.

As an alternative, consider a cotton blend for its natural breathability. If you’re going in a slimmer direction, make sure the material has at least a hint of stretch, so you can move without any restriction.
Thirdly, how you style your shirt makes the difference between a loud, convoluted outfit and an effective statement piece. As such, keep your bottoms simple: chino pants or flat-front shorts, depending on the weather, in black or a neutral hue.

Any shoes should follow suit: Keep your lace-up oxford or slip-on in a solid matching shade. And, as a finishing touch, don’t forget to roll up the shirt’s cuffs.

3. Practicality
For much of its history, the Hawaiian print shirt rattled around in vacation status: something you’re taking out for days away from home on warmer months. By the ‘80s, it gained some clubbing status, as a dressed-up, intentionally loud casual shirt.
Now there’s a new progression, one building on the acceptability of patterned shirts in an office environment.

Dress codes have moved beyond solid shades and pinstripes, and particularly if you work in a more casual space, most prints, provided they’re not too heavy-handed, easily fit in with flat-front pants and a blazer.
But, in this context, the double-notch found on camp collar shirts projects too strong of a leisurely attitude. After all, you’re there to get things done, rather than sit back and wait. Instead, a Hawaiian shirt with familiar button-down features adapts to the 9-to-5.

For your work wardrobe, look for a buttoned collar, a straight fit, and a rounded, shirttail-style hem, and for prints, keep the colors on the neutral to muted side: navy, tan, green, and even red, over hot pink and neon yellow.

How to Wear a Hawaiian Print Shirt (and Look Cool)

How do you wear a Hawaiian print shirt and not make it look like a gimmicky novelty thing? Certain garments never quite disappear – take cargo pants and athletic shoes – but see their popularity wax and wane.

Once a ‘90s staple, cargos now have a reputation as a go-to garment for fashion-unconscious bros. Tech footwear and dad shoes, on the other hand, take athletic styles beyond their practical uses.

1: Short-History of the Vintage Hawaiian Print Shirt
The Hawaiian shirt falls within this pattern. For decades, the relaxed fit and bold prints embodied the clueless tourist, usually someone on a cruise, and were a quick signifier that, no matter where you are, you’re just visiting.

But, it’s also had its pop culture moments: Think cheesy Elvis flicks in the ‘60s and gun-wielding bad-asses from 1983’s Scarface through True Romance and Romeo + Juliet in the ‘90s.

The latter coincided with the casual popularity of bowling shirts through the early aughts, and considering fashion’s 20-year cycles, those familiar palm prints returning to the runway.

2: The Hawaiian Shirt Revival
Much of the Hawaiian print shirt’s revival coincides with the camp collar shirt’s return. Another retro garment getting an upgrade, the camp collar shirt – also called a Cuban collar shirt – features a similarly relaxed silhouette, a straight hem, and a double-notch collar.

Despite the differences, both styles present a variation on the ubiquitous button-up, and in response, every brand from Gucci and Louis Vuitton to Carhartt WIP, Stussy, to Levi’s Hawaiian camp shirt unveiled their take on this familiar staple.
However, while they are all grouped together as Hawaiian shirts, prints and silhouettes vary. Here are the three key ingredients of a modern Hawaiian shirt.

The 10 Best Hawaiian Shirts for a Style Swerve All Year Long

You’ve likely heard this anecdote about the Hawaiian shirt a thousand times: It was once an item you’d only see on the likes of embarrassing drunk uncles or overeager tourists in the tropics. But then, suddenly, this men’s shirt became a really cool, must-have style flex.

You’ve heard this story so many times because, simply put, it’s true. Just have a look at HBO’s recent hit show The White Lotus. Have Hawaiian shirts ever looked this good? Though it’s tricky to pinpoint when or how exactly the Hawaiian shirt went from cringy to must-cop, it’s probably got plenty to do with luxury fashion designers at the helm of prestigious brands sending out their meticulously crafted versions of the vacation shirt, and in doing so, giving it the thumbs up.

And we’re glad they did. The Hawaiian (or aloha) shirt – yes, originating from the island it’s named after – features a camp collar, which is flat and open. Together with the lightweight fabrics used to design them, Hawaiian shirts are the perfect sun shirt made to beat the heat.

In case you’re wondering what differentiates your best camp collar shirt from a Hawaiian one, it’s simple: Strictly speaking, a camp collar shirt must include Hawaiian- or Japanese-inspired prints and patterns (the latter due to the nation’s immigrant community having played a major role in its invention) if it is to be named after the Pacific Island state. However, today’s general classification of Hawaiian shirts includes those that feature prints ranging from mere florals and leaves to pretty much any island-living insignia.

Sure, it’s still going to be steamy out there for quite some time. So, whether you’re embarking on a late warm-weather getaway, or just hanging by the pool on your staycation, end the season on a style high with a selection of hot Hawaiian shirts.

Right Now, I Want to Dress Like Every Boy I Fancied in the '90s

Maybe it's the internet's constant obsession with the '90s, or maybe it's that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are currently promoting Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but I have '90s-era pinups on my mind. Whatever it is, right now, my summer style mood board consists of all the boys I fancied when I was a teenager. But it's not just any old fashion trend (back off, baggy jeans and chain wallets), it's one in particular: the Hawaiian shirt. It just so happens that both Brad and Leo both wore short-sleeved patterned shirts in Fight Club and Romeo + Juliet, respectively, and I now need one for my wardrobe.

I'm keen on styling one with a pair of tailored trousers, or for a real louche skater look, wearing it with loose Adidas track pants. But it could just as easily work wonders with jeans, shorts or thrown over a slip dress. If you're still not totally convinced, you should know that I'm not the only one who's decided this trend is for them, as I've found a load of Instagrammers who also love this look. For help on how to style yours, I've created an edit of the best ways to wear the Hawaiian shirt, plus where to shop the chicest options. Oh, and I've included a couple of shots of how Leo and Brad wore theirs, because why not?

How the Hawaiian Shirt Became Cool Again?

Once a touristy faux-pas the vibrant Hawaiian shirt has become a perennial summer favorite.

Aptly dubbed the "Aloha Shirt," Hawaiian shirts have become a cheeky wardrobe staple. Despite the garment's sunny demeanor, it has a fairly complicated history. Some believe the garment was created when a college student crafted a collared button down out of yukata—the cloth used in Japanese kimonos. Despite this probable origin, Dolores Miyamoto claims it was Hollywood actor John Barrymore who custom ordered a floral button down—in the style of a Hawaiian shirt—from her garment shop. No matter the origin, Hawaiian shirts highlight the luscious flora and fauna of the sunny island through Japanese-influenced colorways and prints. By the mid-1930s, retailers across Hawaii began to widely produce variations of the colorful shirts in an attempt to appeal to natives, tourists, and to highlight the natural beauty of the island.

When servicemembers returned to the mainland United States from Hawaii after World War II, the garment became increasingly popular across the country. Commemorating the "Aloha'' spirit of the island, the shirt became a stylish way to sport a carefree attitude and a welcoming aesthetic. With Hawaii's subsequent statehood in 1959, the tropical shirt was featured across mainland retailers and in pop-culture—Elvis Presley's 1961 album Blue Hawaii features an eclectic Hawaiian shirt.

By the 1970s and '80s, the Hawaiian shirt began to be mass produced across the United States—allowing for widespread sale and consumption. With many workplaces adopting "Aloha Fridays,"—employees could opt for a more casual outfit on the last day of the workweek—the Hawaiian shirt became forever embedded in fashion's style lexicon. Though the original iterations were often made in rayon and synthetic fabrics, cotton and linen became a popular choice for the garment during this period. Making cameos in cult favorites such as Friends, Ace Ventura, and Romeo + Juliet, the garment was a natural sartorial choice for pop-culture's biggest players.

Despite the garment's rapid success throughout the mid 20th-century, its original flair and appeal slowly began to diminish in the new decade. Becoming widely associated with cheesy Dad outfits and overzealous tourists, the shirt evolved into more of a campy costume than a breezy fashionable statement.

With fashion's love for everything nostalgic reemerging in recent years, the Hawaiian shirt has seen a subtle comeback. This time, however, the shirts are strutting down the runways of Prada and Dior rather than sitting on department store shelves. Below, L'OFFICIEL explores the most stylish modern iterations of the beloved garment through the lens of fashion's biggest brands and our favorite celebrities.

Absolutely! The Aloha shirt is a staple of locals in Hawaii and a source of pride. The chilled, laidback vibe of the islands means they're regularly found in corporate offices, as part of uniforms, and in everyday wear. Plus, in some instances, they're also considered formal attire. Locals generally won't wear the bright, flashy touristy kinds, instead opting for sophisticated, stylish designs in natural fabrics such as cotton.

3/ Are Hawaiian shirts in Style?

4/ Should I wear an undershirt with a Hawaiian shirt?
Wearing an undershirt is a personal choice. A plain color tee under a looser cut, unbuttoned shirt can look great. However, many modern styles feature a straight or slim cut design that's intended to be worn on its own, as the style is more flattering.

What is a Hawaiian Shirt?
A Hawaiian shirt, also known as an Aloha shirt, is a short-sleeved shirt with an all-over tropical print, usually featuring floral motifs such as hibiscus, palm trees, monster, and frangipani (plumeria). Often they also boast a relaxed camp (or Cuban) collar and button-up closure. Traditional cuts are loose and relaxed; however, more modern interpretations offer slimmer, more tailored shapes. The style was originally created by Chōtarō Miyamoto and sold in his store in Honolulu. After World War II, returned servicemen and women brought the shirts back to the mainland after being stationed in Hawaii, where they gained even more popularity.

How to Wear a Hawaiian Shirt

The key to wearing Hawaiian shirts without looking like an over-indulged tourist comes down to a few fundamental rules. The first is fit. If you want to look stylish, opt for a more tailored straight or slim cut that flatters your frame. Secondly, you need to have some confidence, because people will recognize immediately if you doubt your look. If you’re hesitant, start your Aloha shirt journey with a more subtle print. The final step is styling. Because the shirt makes such a statement on its own, keep the rest of your outfit plain. Work with the colors in your shirt to choose complementary shades for your lower half, and if in doubt, a neutral-colored pair of shorts or trousers will work in the majority of cases.

1: Hawaiian Shirt & Shorts
Shorts and a Hawaiian shirt is a classic summertime, vacay-vibe combination. These outfits look best with shorts above the knee, with a seven or nine-inch inseam ideal. Choose a single color from the print in your shirt, and find a pair of shorts that match that shade for a bright and fun take. Alternatively, if you want something a little more refined, a contrasting print such as navy and white paired with tailored navy shorts has a classic but cool feel. White and neutral shorts are also safe options. Avoid oversized shirts unless you’re layering them over a plain t-shirt, as a straighter cut will look better. Finally, when it comes to choosing shoes, a pair of white sneakers like Common Projects or a pair of boat shoes in tan or navy are perfect. You’ll look put together yet fresh and contemporary.

2: Hawaiian Shirt + Trousers/Jeans
Hawaiian shirts also look great with trousers for a smart-casual feel. However, similar to shorts pairings, it’s best to keep your pants simple and let the shirt do all the talking. Try drawstring or pleated trousers for a casual yet easy look, or opt for flat-front trousers or chinos for the office. Avoid belts if you can to prevent too much visual noise, and select a slimmer cut shirt to suit the more tailored look. Tucked-in shirts are better if you want to look neat, although you can also wear them untucked depending on the situation. Alternatively, you can opt for an edgier, more urban Harry Styles vibe by wearing your Hawaiian shirt with skinny black jeans, black boots, and throw on a blazer if it’s chilly. When it comes to shoes, sneakers, loafers, and boat shoes are your best bet.
