Here's something people don't expect when they walk through our door: My wife Carol served as a Navy SeaBee — Naval Construction Battalions, building things under impossible conditions. Before that, she ran the 800m at the Naval Academy and earned All-American honors. I spent 20+ years as an AP correspondent covering the White House and the Supreme Court. I've reported from inside the room where decisions get made. Now we sell running shoes in Hyattsville. The question people ask most: why here? Why Prince George's County? Because Prince George's County has been waiting for this. Because the runners here deserve the same access that runners in Bethesda and Rockville have had for 30 years. Because when you've built things and told stories for your whole career, eventually you want to build something that belongs to your own community. Haraka means "speed" or "movement" in Swahili. 🇺🇸 A note from the Haraka Run and Walk family 🇺🇸
This July 4th, Haraka Run and Walk will be CLOSED — and honestly, we have more reasons to celebrate than most.
Here's why:
July 3rd is the wedding anniversary of our co-owners, Carol and Jesse Holland. 💍
July 4th is the birthday of their son, Jesse III — who, for the past year, has been showing up Wednesdays as the rabbit on our Wednesday Weekly Walk. If you've joined us for a walk, you know the rabbit: the person out front who sets the pace, makes sure no mone, and makes sure every walker finishes strong. Jesse III has been that person, every week, rain or shine. 🐇🏃🏾
And of course — it's America's 250th birthday. 🎂🇺🇸
With the Holland family stepping away to celebrate all three milestones, we will be closed on Saturday, July 4th.
We reopen Sunday, July 5th at noon.
After that, our regular hours resume:

🔴 Heat wave continues into July 4th Saturday, highs near 100°
If you're getting your steps or miles in this week and through the holiday: go early (before 9am) or go late (after 7pm), drink water before you're thirsty, wear sunscreen, and listen to your body. Heat illness comes on fast — dizziness, nausea, or no sweating are signs to stop immediately and get to AC. Heat stroke is an emergency: call 911.
We'll still be moving with you — Wednesday Weekly Walk at 7pm and Fast Forward Friday at 6am, both on the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail.

We know some of you had Medical Night on the calendar for June 30. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we've had to postpone — but we're already working on a new date, and we'll share it soon.

What a day at the HBCU Run the District Festival.

Prince George's County and the DMV running community came through in a big way, and Haraka Run and Walk was right there with you — as the only independent Black-owned, veteran-owned, D9-owned running specialty store in the DMV.

We saw runners in their Haraka gear on the course. We recognized shoes we fit right here in the store. We shared coupons for your next visit. And at least one runner is heading home in a fresh new pair.

That's the feeling we're building every single day at 5501 Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville — a place where Prince George's County's runners are seen, known, and equipped.
