Horn, corozo, and mother-of-pearl buttons offer a refined finish and signal quality beyond standard plastic. A jacket button should be sewn with a thread shank, allowing the jacket to button without straining the cloth. Check buttonholes for even thread tension and secure stay stitching.

A three-fold tie uses folded layers with interlining for structure, while six- and seven-fold constructions use more fabric for a fuller hand and naturally substantial knot. Heavier interlining creates firmness; lighter interlining produces a softer, more relaxed knot.

Hand-rolled edges offer a soft, rounded finish, while tipped edges provide a cleaner, more structured finish. A self-tie bow tie is a tying method, not a fabric. Grenadine describes an open silk weave, while knit and wool ties add matte texture and seasonal warmth.

Pair grenadine with flannel, wool with tweed, and knit or textured silk with corduroy. After wearing, roll your tie instead of hanging it to help prevent creasing. Steam wrinkles gently and address stains promptly without aggressive rubbing.

Dress shirts should be long enough to stay tucked throughout the day, ending around mid-fly. For casual sport shirts, look for an even hem that lands near the lower hip or zipper so the untucked look feels intentional. Straight, even tails work well untucked; longer, curved tails are typically better tucked.

A shawl lapel feels classic, while a peak lapel adds sharper definition. Pair velvet only with wool, mohair, or non-velvet tailored trousers, never velvet trousers, ideally with a subtle satin braid. Keep the rest restrained: a crisp white dress shirt, hand-tied bow tie, and black patent or highly polished calf oxfords. With a double-breasted velvet jacket, skip the cummerbund for a cleaner line.

Reserve velvet for evenings and cooler weather. Since it reveals every wrinkle and gap, the shoulders must sit clean, the chest must not pull, and the waist should drape without strain. Well-tailored cotton or mid-weight velvet reads refined, not costume-like.
