This narrative targets parents of adolescents and may provide insightful guidance, particularly for those contemplating interstate relocation when their child is 16, given the potential detrimental impact on their mental wellbeing. My family's 1994 relocation from Arizona to Indiana, precipitated by substance abuse concerns, serves as a cautionary example highlighting the significance of abstaining from narcotics. I recount my experience to assist teenagers and adults alike, sans shame or stigma. During my freshman and sophomore years, I was enrolled at Warren Central High School, an experience marked by considerable challenges. Subsequently, I transferred to Beech Grove High School for my junior and senior years, where I endeavored to join the basketball team. Despite my enthusiasm for the sport and presence of a teammate exceeding 6 feet in height, my underweight physique likely contributed to our shared failure to make the cut. The coach's rationale centered on the sport's physical demands, a justification I acknowledge as legitimate. Initially, my reaction was characterized by frustration, exacerbated by the stress of adapting to a novel environment following our relocation from Arizona. As someone who was previously a happy child, this setback had the potential to be more traumatic. Three years later, I had the opportunity to convey my sentiments to the coach, who also served as my social studies instructor and was subsequently dismissed at the end of the season owing to his team's winless record. Although the experience was disheartening, its impact has endured, remaining memorable at 47. To teenagers contemplating trying out for sports teams, I stress the importance of physical preparation and genuine passion for the sport. To parents, I recommend exercising careful deliberation prior to making significant relocations, particularly during pivotal phases of their child's life. Furthermore, I underscore the paramount importance of avoiding substance abuse.
