What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways and may also rotate. Instead of appearing straight, the spine may form an “S” or “C” shape. Scoliosis is defined as a spinal curve measuring more than 10 degrees.
The most common form in teenagers is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). “Idiopathic” means the exact cause is unknown.
Did You Know?
Approximately 2–4% of adolescents are affected by adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
It most commonly develops during the rapid growth years of adolescence.
Both boys and girls can develop scoliosis, but girls are much more likely to develop curves that progress and require treatment.
About 30% of people with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis have a family history of the condition.
Scoliosis is not caused by poor posture, carrying a heavy backpack, playing sports, or anything the athlete did wrong.
Many people with scoliosis continue to participate successfully in athletics and everyday activities.
Why This Night Matters to Us
Scoliosis isn't just a statistic for our volleyball family. Two of our own players are currently navigating scoliosis, Emmary Fett and Danika Rieks, making this cause especially meaningful to our team.
Our goal is not only to raise awareness, but also to help provide resources that can support athletes dealing with back soreness, tightness, and discomfort.
Where Will the Money Go?
Funds collected from our shirt sales ($5.00/shirt sold) will stay right here in our community. The money will be used to purchase Hyperice Venom 2 Back Wraps for our school's training room for ALL student- athletes to access.
The Venom 2 combines controlled heat and vibration to help warm muscles, increase blood flow, and soothe sore or tight lower back muscles. Having these wraps available in our training room would provide another recovery and warm-up resource for athletes experiencing muscular back discomfort.
While the Venom 2 does not treat or correct scoliosis itself, heat and vibration can provide temporary comfort for tight or sore back muscles.
Our hope is that these wraps will become a resource available to our student-athletes when appropriate whether that be before, during, or even after practices and competitions and under the guidance of our athletic training staff.
More Than a Volleyball Game
Tonight is about supporting our athletes, increasing awareness, and reminding those living with scoliosis that they are surrounded by a community that cares.
Thank you for supporting Scoliosis Awareness Night and helping us turn awareness into action. We've Got Your Back
