Have you noticed how clothes these days can often be made with materials that tend to need repairs after minimal wear and one wash? Yes indeed it’s a problem. Often times the clothes are not worth the time, effort and cost to warrant repairs; thus the clothes ends up in the landfill and new ones are bought to replace them. Material aside, another part of the problem is the lack of general education to make minimal repairs to clothing. I consider myself lucky to have been among the last generation to enjoy an actual home economics class at a public school. I still sew and often times will go to great lengths to repair a clothing item before it ships off to it’s new owners. 🔥 One time I set a tweed blazer on fire (no pun intended) after having cleaned a stain from it, I was rushing and attempted to dry it with a hair dryer (kids do not try this at home) to get to the post office in time to ship it out… you know how that goes! I reminded myself it’s my duty as a to at least attempt to save things when possible. By taking some tweed from the inner part of the jacket I was able to re weave it back together. This is an extreme case of course. Most cases involve a minor repair along a seam or sewing in simple new button for minimal time and cost, extending the life cycle of the clothes and reliving planetary stress.
