My old logo was severely pixelated and grainy, so I finally asked to help me turn it into a professional format. She gave it a complete makeover at the same time!! I could not be more pleased!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’ซ

It'll take me a few days to get my profile picture and whatnot switched over, but I'm so happy and wanted to give her a big shout out. Little things make a big difference. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜

(The new logo is the first image and the old one is the second. If there's any weird resolution with this version of the new one coming thru, that's entirely on me. ๐Ÿคฃ)

๐Ÿงต A few moments from the past few weeks. I love my job and I'm so lucky. Thank you all so much for your ongoing support!! It's hard work keeping up with the sewing needs that cross my path, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Well... except if more people learned how to sew. ๐Ÿ˜Š If you are sewing-curious, there is no time like the present, and any starting place is a good starting place. ๐Ÿ˜Š I regret that I am not finding the time right now to give one-on-one lessons, but please check out the wonderful offerings at , , Makerspace, , , , and other places I don't know about (please comment!!) I encourage you to start your sewing journey!! ๐Ÿงต

Buttonholes can be intimidating! Even for an experienced sewist. Plus, to make matters worse, every sewing machine seems to use a different process. I prefer doing buttonholes on my old Pfaff (which I've had since high school) rather than my newer Janome. The Pfaff lets the fabric stay in one place the whole way through, whereas the Janome makes you swivel the fabric halfway through, which is a headache.

Here's how the process looks. I mark first with pins, stitch (carefully!), and open with a seam ripper (carefully!) I like to put a little piece of tape on the side of the machine foot to mark the size, especially if I'm doing multiples. And when cutting, I start the seam ripper from each end and meet in the middle - way too easy to rip if you go all the way one way!!

I learned last year that there used to be people called "finishers" whose ENTIRE job it was to make buttonholes. There likely still are. Can you imagine??

Hi everyone. Hell of a week, right? When things are tough I like to focus on what's needed for good sewing, because it's needed for life, too, and helps me stay grounded. In case it helps someone else, here are a few reflections.

1. Patience is key. I like that phrase, "Slow down, I'm in a hurry!" Some tasks just take time, and to do a good job (and stay sane) we have to honor that. If I rush I will cut a thread I didn't mean to, veer off track, or create a tangle. Breathe through it slowly and surely.

2. Regulate tension. There is a certain amount of tension inherent in a fabric, held between the small threads that make it up, keeping things together and creating strength, flexibility and resilience. When we work with it we need to observe that tension and match it. Too little and things unravel, too much and things get damaged or become vulnerable.

3. Focus. I've been kinda overwhelmed in the mornings this week, but coming into the shop and sitting down to a concrete task has helped tremendously. I can't fix everything, but I can do my best at one thing at a time and make it come out better than it was.

I'm so lucky to get to do things I enjoy. I've been reflecting on changes in Thread Lightly in the 2+ year (!) journey so far, and will update soon with clarified direction that is coming into focus. In the meantime, take care of yourselves and thank you for your continued support.

(Also, much as I would like to switch social media platforms I just don't have the bandwidth right now. I remain immensely grateful for your word of mouth referrals in the community, which is ultimately all we can depend on.)
