Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, I remember as a young boy my local newspaper doing a front page article about D-Day. As a young man, I had the honor of drinking beers and listening to the paratroopers who jumped into Normandy as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. Their stories of jumping into the drop zones of Normandy and their legendary exploits solidified my respect and admiration for the greatest generation.

Five times in my life I have been to Normandy, four with GORUCK and every time it’s different. I can run events all over the world and talk of the exploits of young men but standing on the beaches of Normandy with our community and being able to physically describe to folks what exactly happened so many years ago is special.

The two most spiritual experiences I have had with GORUCK occurred on Omaha Beach. These beaches symbolize a turning point in world history. We collectively came together to destroy tyranny in the greatest team event the world has ever seen. We will always come and honor the sacrifices of the men who jumped from airplanes and stormed the beaches of Normandy to ensure a better world for generations to come.

Earlier this month, I gathered with some former colleagues and found ourselves reminiscing about our training days, trying to put into words how our service, and the people we served beside, marked us in ways we still don’t fully understand.

Those memories can feel far away now, buried beneath the routines of daily life and the comfort of home. And yet, it’s remarkable how quickly a few familiar faces can transport you back to a different season of life, one that felt simpler in some ways, where purpose was clear and we felt most alive in the face of uncertainty and danger.

On May 15, a new star was added to the CIA Memorial Wall, bringing the total to 141 fallen officers. Among them is Johnny Micheal Spann, commemorated by the 79th star — the CIA’s and America’s first battlefield casualty after 9/11.

The evening before that ceremony, Jason and I joined Michael “Rod” Rodriguez and local DC ruckers for a ruck to the future site of the Global War on Terror Memorial. It was a quiet reminder that none of us walk away unchanged from the sacrifices made in service to this country. We carry those lives with us in gratitude and in the responsibility to remember.

Last year, Jason and I brought our kids to volunteer with the Travis Manion Foundation’s Honor Project at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Together, we placed flags and name placards at the gravesites of fallen veterans. The experience left such a lasting impression on our family that we knew it had to become an annual tradition. We’ll be back again this Memorial Day.

This Memorial Day, we remember those who gave everything in service to our nation and we honor them by living lives worthy of that sacrifice.

GARAGE GYM TO THE BASEBALL FIELDS…
Sandbags back in stock, FINALLY

We spent most of 2025 out of stock of our Sandbags because estimating demand was really hard (and still is). Then this year, much of what we did build sat with the bureaucracy in customs for over six (extra) months - we’re not complaining, just explaining. But Alas! A year later, we have a full re-stock of our TRAIN WITH SAND gear.

GET IT HERE: https://www.goruck.com/collections/sand-training

We started building these in 2013 and have proven them at thousands of events all over the world. They all come with our Scars Lifetime Guarantee, which nobody else comes close to offering.

Call that peace of mind on the quality, but then the TRICK is to use them when you got ‘em:

My garage is full of all different shapes and sizes of sandbags, sand kettlebells, med balls etc. — you can stack them so they don’t take up so much space. And there’s an added bonus — when I’m headed to the beer fridge from the house, if I happen to kick one of the sandbags, my foot barely even notices. If you’ve ever kicked an iron kettlebell, that’ll cost you a lot of cash in the cuss jar and a swollen big toe. Sand is better like that.

When it’s time to whoop it on, we move the sandbags to the driveway, one by one. Then, do the workout. Pretty simple & nobody cares how much weight you do. You do you. Also, there’s a ¼ mile loop that we like to do between sets. Grab a sandbag and go makes it more challenging — bonus points for a front rack med ball carry.

I keep some in my Jeep and bring them to my boys’ baseball practice. You see, I took another job as a strength and conditioning coach for the 9U All Star team, lol. And I like to look the part by wearing my vest — “Were you in the Army?” … I get so many questions and the boys and their friends are growing up to be great young men. I join them and carrying sandbags practically does the team building for me, and the kids get tougher, too. This also works for adults.

My goal is to stay strong and healthy so I can enjoy more of their lives and give back more to the next generation, so I’ll keep training with sand.

BUT HOW MUCH WEIGHT
MURPH Modifications with Sandbags and a Vest

MURPH is the most popular single-day workout event in the country. I’m not much for chasing trends just because, but honoring Memorial Day’s meaning with a little sweat is something we definitely get behind. If you’re on the fence, I say go for it.

Because I have a *****-*** elbow, I have to modify the workout. I trade out pull-ups for sandbag rows. The main point here is to say, do what you gotta do and prescriptions can be modified (or ignored entirely).

I’ll wear a 20 # Rucking Weight Vest for everything and I have a 60 # Sandbag.

The full workout will look like this for me:

Buy-In: 1 Mile at 80 # (Vest + Sandbag), then:
10 ROUNDS:

20 Bent Over Sandbag Rows (straight lower back)
20 Push-Ups (eyes forward back straight chest hits the ground!)
30 Squats (femurs parallel or zero rep yourself - GET SOME)

Cash Out: 1 mile at 80 #

Then I’ll bask in the glory of my pool of sweat and raise a cold one to the fallen with emily and some friends.

Note:
If you don’t have a vest, it’s OK.
If you don’t have a sandbag, it’s OK.
If you have to walk, that’s OK.
If you want to challenge yourself to go really fast or hard or for time, go for it! It’s up to you. I do the 80 # ruck instead of the 20 run because my body prefers rucking. You do you.
If all you have is your body, modify it to do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

And this is important: Memorial Day is best when shared — call a buddy up and do it together!

One funny story, one NOT funny story from our 12-Miler in DC for Ruckapalooza. (The 12 Miler with an old buddy was so perfect it was too boring for here), so let’s cut to the chase:
🥶 THE FUNNY ONE: We changed the rules for the EMBRACE THE COLD patch, Calvin Ball style. Old rules: we time you for 3 minutes. New rules: You get in, there are no clocks, and you get out when you think it’s been 3 minutes. If you get out early? NO PATCH. If anyone tells you the time? We add a minute. We had people staying in for over 15 minutes. Turns out, we’re all capable of a lot more than we think. That’s GORUCK AF.
🇺🇸 THE NOT FUNNY ONE: For the first time since 2010, we’ve heard hesitation from some Ruck Club Leaders about carrying the American Flag because of a perception that it’s now a “political statement.”
Let’s set the record straight: The flag belongs neither to the right nor the left, no matter who is in office. It represents the United States of America. Zero politics, just a deep love of country and a respect for those who serve the dream of who we can be together. We’ve always carried it, and we will keep carrying it. If you see us, honk or say what’s up. THANK YOU! People are the best part of GORUCK now and forever.

“MURPH” = “BODY ARMOR”
Honor the sacrifice with work

WHY MURPH

When Lt. Murphy did the workout now named after him, he called it “BODY ARMOR” and it was designed to train as you fight, meaning — with all your kit on. In combat, you never go anywhere without weight. If you run, you sprint with your weight on (and your guns). If you crawl, you have your kit on. It’s heavy and you get stronger to deal with it by training in it. That’s how it works.

It has become a global tradition to wear a weight vest during MURPH, done on Memorial Day. We’re all doing it and hope you’ll join us.

One note on a modification - Rows vs. Pull-ups:
The workout calls for 100 pull-ups. If you can and want to do it exactly as prescribed, good. If you need to modify this section, bent over sandbag rows also hit the “pull” movement. But they’re less taxing and for me, they don’t bring on elbow tendinitis. I’m not trying to talk you out of anything. I do the rows now because my elbows don’t cooperate very well with my life goals sometimes, and doing MURPH this way to honor the sacrifice is better than doing nothing.

In the dead of night at 1:51 a.m. on June 6, 1944, the 82nd Airborne Division plummeted into the heart of occupied France.

While the world slept, Mission Boston was already in motion, hurling thousands of paratroopers through a gauntlet of anti-aircraft fire and thick fog. They didn’t land in neat formations; they were scattered across the flooded hedgerows and stone steeples of Sainte-Mère-Église, forced to fight where they fell.

This was the moment the “All-Americans” traded the safety of the sky for the brutal reality of the ground, securing the flank of the Allied invasion and changing the course of history forever.

To commemorate the 82nd anniversary of D-Day and the division’s legendary role in the liberation of Europe, you are tasked with an 8.2-mile ruck.

This isn’t just a distance; it’s a physical tribute to the grit and sacrifice of the paratrooper. You are carrying the weight of that legacy and your own gear to prove you have what it takes to shoulder the burden.

Put in the work. Embrace the suck. Earn the patch that honors those who jumped into the dark.

COMMIT NOW:
https://www.goruck.com/products/anti-virtual-8-2-miler-for-d-day

THE OBJECTIVE

100% of the proceeds from the Airborne 8.2 miler will go directly to supporting Fox Force 55 and their historic all-women parachute jump into Normandy for the 82nd anniversary of D-Day and beyond.

A Very Limited Run of Tactical Gear
7 years of requests in the making

It’s been a hot minute since we built any tactical gear. A global pandemic happened, rucking took off, and these days we’ve had to stay focused on our core mission of making rucking bigger than running. But many of you asked and asked, and some of you cashed in a few favors, so here it is — a very limited run of our Tactical Gear.

What we built this round is what we built, there is nothing else on order for now, or maybe for another 7 years.

Thank you for the support.
