At RUCK OR DIE 003, we burned it down - I haven’t been that smoked in years, and that seemed to be the consensus at the end, right before we rucked back up to join in some 5K fun. We are the weirdos, the ones pushing hard on life, and we have each other. This makes all the difference.

The proving grounds for people is also the proving grounds for our gear, and this go round it was the Mackall 45 and GR MONSTER. Just like us, the gear can handle it, but it’s vital to the death of pride to periodically test yourself, and your gear, hard. Aka every once in a while you have to do something that really sucks, or the risk is that you’re just living in the past at the expense of right this second. At the expense of the truth.

In my life, Monster had just passed, and the event hurt as bad as any I’ve ever been a part of. It hurt less because of the people who showed up with me to chase the sunrise until we found it.

As for the gear, we are immensely proud of both the ruck and the shoes — gear with meaning, gear with soul. Monster’s final approval and his final photo shoot — tough and beautiful like him — before he crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by nothing but love.

What we tested, including ourselves, has been through blood, sweat, and now a lot of tears.

It hurts, and it’s worth it. I would change nothing.

When two million people filled Times Square to celebrate the end of the war, America marked a triumph of unity, service, and purpose—a generation that returned home to build the country we love today.

Everywhere I went, Monster wasn’t. The grief was raw and the absence overwhelming. I’m not an expert nor do I want to be, but I have gone through this before. Time helps, but it helps more when I do something physically painful to dull the other pain.

RUCK OR Die 003 was a beautiful tribute. A bunch of us weirdos met at 1am Saturday and rucked all over Jax together. We had just launched the GR MONSTER — and thank you for the support — and it was the only obvious rucksack for me to use. We ended up ruck shuffling somewhere between 13-17 miles depending on the source, and fighting the Grim Reaper back in other exciting ways — then we tacked on a 5K for more fun. The best part about GORUCK is the people. We’re at our very best face to face and shoulder to shoulder. Sometimes you’re looking for a little affirmation from the world that it’s gonna be OK, and I got it.

As for the GR MONSTER. I took the prototype that I had hundreds of miles hiking and traveling in, and wanted another reason to think of Monster during Ruck or Die. It worked. And in terms of a hiking or a travel pack, there aren’t many out there that you can load with 40 lbs (20 lbs in the laptop compartment) and ruck shuffle all night with and say damn, that feels really good. The point is not that this is the perfect ruck for Ruck or Die — it’s that it’s built for moving weight comfortably so you can be uncomfortable in other, more rewarding ways. Like finding somewhere for your love to go.

For the final workout “Monster Forever”, inspired by our driveway style and Monster’s last day (8/15) we did 10 rounds of:

* 8 Overhead Presses
* 15 Push-Ups (Monster’s favorite time to lick your face, and I felt him there)
* 100 meter front rack carry — because someday you may have to carry your dog like this, be ready for it.

What you do with the things gives them the meaning that you need.

HIKING PACK + DAY RUCK

13 Years in Development. Monster’s Final Approval.

This past Friday, we were finally ready to sign off on a rucksack that we’ve been working on for 13 years, aka Monster’s whole life. He was sitting under the table on his bed at Scars, never far from the action (or Christian’s treat bags). We approved the final sample, celebrated a quiet win, and moved onto the next task. That’s when Angel came around the corner and said Monster had fallen on his way outside and couldn’t get back up. No matter how ready you are, it always comes too soon. Monster passed the next day at home, surrounded by our family and all the love in our hearts.

Monster loved serving as your President of GORUCK Nation and he loved you all with his whole heart. Thank you for loving him back with yours.

Next steps are never easy and the grief comes in waves — but there are no coincidences in the universe. The rucksack we approved together on the last full day of his life is now and forever called GR MONSTER. Emily and I both used it for a week on the John Muir Trail in California, and when we were going to see Oasis in Scotland last summer, I used it there, too, all around Edinburgh. It slimmed down enough that they even let me wear it in the Scottish National Gallery of Art - surrounded by other works of beauty.

It’s a dayruck, a hiking pack, you can strip it down to the essentials or add enough accessories to live out of it basically forever. It’s tough and beautiful, like Monster.

This will be the first run, marked with a special internal label, and it’s a pre-order. The patch it comes with is exclusive to the GR MONSTER, and at a deeply personal level, I’m always looking for more meaning out of the things in my life, or else they’re just things. The GR MONSTER is full of the spirit of the dog who served us all faithfully, with loyalty and above all love. We honor him with this ruck and the adventures we’ll take it on, for all the days of our lives. Monster Forever.
