Bob “Bullet” Hayes (1942–2002) was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he starred at Matthew W. Gilbert High School—part of the undefeated 1958 team that won Florida’s Black-school state championship.  At Florida A&M University, Hayes became a track phenomenon, setting world-best marks in the 60-yard (5.9) and 100-yard (9.1) dashes.  He exploded onto the world stage at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, winning gold in the 100m and anchoring the 4x100m relay to a world record.  He then changed pro football as a deep threat for the Dallas Cowboys, winning Super Bowl VI and later earning a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Class of 2009)—one of the only athletes to own both Olympic gold and a Super Bowl ring.
