Top brands, knowledgeable staff, and gear you can trust when it matters. Stop by Mahoney’s in Johnson City and get ready for your next adventure. Mahoney's was founded in 1960 by Harold and Irene Mahoney at the corner of Sunset Drive and Knob Creek Road. What started as a simple Army/Navy store, eventually evolved into the premier outdoor store that it is today. In 1970, when their son Dan returne

d from the Army, Mahoney's began its evolution into the outdoor store you visit today. Dan added categories for clothing, footwear, hunting, and camping. In 1980, Dan's wife Katie joined the business and took over the management of the ladies department. This addition added just the touch the department needed to make it the best women's apparel shop in the area. In 1991, the area’s largest full service fly fishing department became a part of Mahoney's history. In 1992, Dan's son Sean joined the business. He became the firearms department manager, as well as chief buyer for archery, firearms, muzzleloading, reloading, and cutlery. In 1993, Mahoney's Outfitters opened on Roan Street in Johnson City, as a specialty outdoor store featuring hiking, camping, climbing, and paddling goods. In 2003, Mahoney's opened its third location in Abingdon, VA. This location also boasts a large hunting, archery, and reloading department. It is southwest Virginia's premier hunting dealer. In 2005, Mahoney's opened the newly remodeled store with 20,000 square feet of a sportsman's paradise. Our Outfitter’s store, previously located on North Roan Street, moved into the Sunset Drive location to make shopping more convenient. In 2009, Mahoney's launched their first adventure outside of the store by becoming an online retailer and expanding their line of products even greater. Here at Mahoney's, we love the outdoors as much as our customers. We provide a broad range of clothing, footwear and equipment to all our customers, from weekend warriors to avid trail trekkers. We have only the best quality when it comes to our customer service, and we stand behind all of our products 100%.

Mr. Scotty Joe Cooper, age 64, fought a good fight and won the battle on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He is now rejoicing in the arms of Jesus and is no longer in pain.

He was born on June 3, 1962, in Johnson City, to the late Virgil "Red" and Mary Nell Campbell Cooper. In addition to his parents, Scotty is preceded in death by his brother, Randy Cooper; nephew, Clint Cooper; great nephew, Clay Thomas Collins; father-in-law, Buddy Day; granny, Kate McKinney; and aunt, Elaine Clouse.

Scotty was a man who found joy in the simple things in life; his family, his church family, and his friends. He was a kind and genuine man who never needed much to be happy, and those who knew him will remember his friendly smile, his incredible memory, and the warmth he brought into the lives of others.

For more than 20 years, Scotty was a familiar and friendly face at Mahoney’s Outfitters in Johnson City, where he worked behind the knife counter. To those who came through the doors, Scotty was more than an employee; he was someone who was always ready with a smile, a conversation, and a wealth of knowledge.

Scotty loved his family dearly, but there was a special place in his heart for his daughter, Mackenzee. He was passionate about her and took great pride in being her dad. The love he had for her was evident to everyone who knew him.

He enjoyed NASCAR, a good steak, working in his garden and watching the flowers bloom. He loved sitting down for a game of Rook, watching Andy Griffith and Gunsmoke, and listening to many different genres of music. Scotty was a kind man with a big heart. He loved deeply, remembered much, and was grateful for the people and things that made his life meaningful. His smile, his stories, his incredible memory, and the love he shared with those around him will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Ronda Cooper; daughter, Mackenzee Cooper Bray and husband, Garrett; mother-in-law, Linda Day; brothers, Freddie Cooper and Gary Cooper (Martha); sister-in-law, Alisa Payne; brother-in-law, Mike Day (Wanda); special nieces and nephews, Katie Fox (Jordan) and their children, Jake and Lyndee, Mendy Collins (Eric) and their children, Sadee and Sophee, Cody Day (Kendra) and their children, Sklyer, Aiden, and Walker, and Dustin Day (Caitlin) and their son, Luke; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; great friend and co-worker, Larry Shanks; and all his Mahoney’s family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Patel and Abby at the TN Cancer Specialists office for the wonderful care of Scotty.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Maple Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Jeremy D***s and Nephew, Cody Day officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” Revelation 21:4

He won!!!

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Dillow-Taylor to help with Scotty's funeral expenses.

Condolences may be sent to the Cooper family online at www.dillow-taylor.com
