The Farallon Islands weren’t always surrounded by water. 😮

On a cold, windy day 17,000 years ago, you could have left “San Francisco” on foot and walked 26 miles (42 km) west to the surf—six miles (10 km) past today’s Farallon Islands.

In fact, the Farallons weren’t even islands—just hilltops on the edge of a broad, exposed coastal plain gradually sloping toward the Pacific.

As ice ages came and went, global sea levels rose and fell by hundreds of feet.

At the peak of the last ice age, sea levels were about 300 feet (91 m) lower than today, exposing huge areas of the continental shelf off California.

San Francisco Bay was then a grassy valley populated by mammoths and elk.

The Farallons were hills that stood about 400 to 500 feet (122 to 152 m) above the surrounding plain, with stunning views of the coastline to the west.

Looking east, today's Golden Gate would have been just a gap in the distant hills.

What we now call San Francisco Bay is, in geologic terms, largely an anomaly.

Over the last 600,000 years or so, the Bay has existed only during three short episodes, adding up to roughly 15,000 years in total.

Each iteration of the bay has lasted about 5,000 years before vanishing again as sea levels rose.

The bay we know today has been near its present size for only about the last 4,000 years.

Based on the pst, it may only be around another 1,000 years.

Even the most iconic and familiar landscapes can be amazingly temporary.

On timescales of hundreds of thousands of years, bays drain, rivers reroute, mountains rise, and coastlines migrate.

The water, wetlands, and real estate we know are just one chapter in a much longer Earth story.

For those who live, travel, and work in the Bay Area, that perspective is both awe-inspiring and humbling.
