“Nā Hua Wiliwili ‘O Kaho’olawe”
(Wiliwili Offspring Of Kaho’olawe)
Inspired by hearing the haumana walaʻau about the theme of
this years 8th grade Kaiapuni graduating class of 2026, this design was created by Hakuole Designs and reflects deeply on the kumu lā’au
Wiliwili.
In doing research Hakuole came across a beautiful Wiliwili tree that
inspired him to sketch it. A month later, at Paeloko and in seeing ‘anakē
Lei there, and while chatting and reminiscing about how fast these haumāna have grown since their Pūnana Leo graduation, we started talking about the Lā Puka. Hakuole then shared with ʻanakē Lei how he drew a Wiliwili tree in their honor. Upon showing this drawing to ʻanakē Lei she immediately recognized the tree as one from Kaho’olawe. She then said “This is a famous tree! It’s the tree that represents our people - that no matter what happens to our people we are still here - like that tree. I have a Keiki from this tree! Come and see!” A few steps later Hakuole was introduced to this keiki tree and while kiloing into the canopy he noticed a seed pod that was open with seeds still in it - almost in the shape of a hand. This design of a keiki pod of the māmā tree came together in a loss for words.
Carried through this design, these connections to Wākea are a
communication that carry hō’ailona to remind us that the Hawaiian People
are more resilient than you know and the truth lives in the roots that are
passed forward through the seeds - like these Keiki passing through
time.
