Back-to-school looks a little different when your child is deaf or hard of hearing. 🦻🎒
It’s not just about new clothes, school supplies, and figuring out the morning routine. It’s making sure hearing devices are working, teachers understand accommodations, microphones are being used correctly, seating makes sense, and your child feels comfortable advocating for themselves.
And one of the biggest things I wish more people understood?
Hearing sound is not the same as understanding what was said.
Classrooms are LOUD. Cafeterias are louder. Add assemblies, recess, group work, buses, and after-school activities—and our DHH kids are working overtime just to keep up.
That’s why listening fatigue, quiet breaks, proper accommodations, and self-advocacy matter so much.
I put together 10 back-to-school tips for deaf and hard of hearing kids that I hope will help parents, teachers, and school staff start the year with a little more understanding. ❤️
Save this for the school year, share it with your child’s teacher, or send it to another DHH parent who might need it.
What would you add to the list? 🦻
