This 1950s Italian desk doubles as an eye-catching light fixture, with the nine convex lenses reflecting off the milk glass desktop. Check out those triangular prism marble pulls as well. I don’t know who the designer is but I know it’s good design.

Some Hans Wegner Papa Bear ‘paws’ I made for a chair that was missing both. I took the chance to make them out of some beautiful Bolivian Rosewood because, why not? This 🐻 chair was the first one I’ve also had to disassemble completely to replace broken dowels so it was fun to restore its famously well engineered structure. Looking forward to enjoying this one at home when it’s ready.

A complete George Nakashima Origins Dining set for Widdicomb, 1959. Pic 2 is from the Chicago Tribune in Nov 1961. Set includes table and one leaf, 2 armchairs, 4 side chairs, sideboard and hutch. Table has original pads that explain the great condition and the sideboard even has a Widdicomb signed silverware insert. All in very good original condition. Some great joinery details as is to be expected.

An A Frame cover structure for the sauna I built last week with Casey . It provides a focal point, privacy screen and shelter for the space. I intentionally have it straddling the fence to extend beyond the constraints of the fenced space. I always wanted to reuse the wood from the Campbell and Wong 1952 ‘Leisure House’ replica I built back in 2018 with Robert Vonderlühe and this seemed like a good enough reason to dig them out. A fun summer project!

I spent the past week attempting to learn Japanese Joinery with 20 other woodworking nerds in rural Kentucky and it was a blast! With excellent instruction by Jon Billing and masterful insights from Yama san paired with an idyllic setting to camp in, superb food laid on at every meal and a great atmosphere of sharing and support throughout, I’ll definitely be back for another course.

Routinely misattributed to Vladimir Kagan, it was nice to find this cocktail table was actually designed by Joanne Burke for Mil Mode as seen in the 1961 catalog. The collection took not so subtle inspiration from other designers including Noguchi and Harvey Probber.

It’s not every day you get a package from Lithuania containing a 1961 issue of the New Homes Guide you read about in a letter to the architect from 1963 so you’ve been hunting it for a year and managed to find one for sale on a Lithuanian Facebook group for old books using a screen cap of the cover and Google’s image search and so you use Google translate to ask the very kind lady in Kaunas if she would be able to mail it to the United States…and she does.

Well today was that day!

What’s even more amazing is she said she only put it online halfheartedly and was going to throw it away in the next couple of days before I got in touch.

Good people and technology for the win!

Our deck remodel: the Carver house came with a long abandoned, junk filled pool surrounded by rotten decking, so we removed both, framed and covered the hole at first, redecking everything. Then I had a rethink and dropped the center section creating a conversation pit with cascading staircase, built-in bench, and integrated plantings. Still a ways to go, but very happy what once was an eyesore is now an attraction! Weighing up, putting an A-frame roof structure over the sauna. What do you think? Big thanks to the Trystcraft team for help with the unglamorous first two stages.
