I have been diving deep into art lately. It has always been one of my favorite things to curate, and these days I spend hours looking at art on a daily basis. It is integral to pretty much every aspect of the work I do.

With how fast the world seems to be moving, I have been trying to be more intentional about finding beauty in the mundane, seeking out human to human interaction, and slowing down enough to breathe and truly experience life.

Tonight, I’m releasing a small collection of six original paintings that have sparked my curiosity, stopped me in my tracks, and brought moments of joy and wonder over the last few weeks. I hope these pieces continue working their magic in your hands.

All six will be available online tonight.

I’ve been so into magazines lately, reaching for them more than design books, or any digital sources of inspiration. It feels simultaneously nostalgic and energizing.

I’ve slowly been working my way through the vintage collection of World of Interiors magazines my mother-in-law gifted me, and I just finished the latest issue of FOUND Travel + Living Journal that arrived in the mail yesterday.

Flipping through the pages of a magazine or book with your hands is an experience a screen simply can’t replicate. Turning the pages, going back to something you almost missed, leaving one open on the table to come back to later. I’ve really been enjoying that physical part of finding inspiration lately.

Have you ever noticed how rarely you see a TV in photos of professionally designed homes? Sometimes they’re cleverly hidden, and sometimes they’re simply outside the frame.

But TVs are part of how most of us actually live, so I think they’re worth designing around thoughtfully too.

At our house, we only have one. And it’s kind of wild to think about, but in the 15 years Travis and I have lived together, we’ve only ever purchased one television.

When the architecture and floor plan allow for it, I like finding a place for TV watching that doesn’t require making the television the centerpiece of the main living space. That was actually one of the selling points of our house for us. There isn’t even a wall you could put a TV against in our living room. Maybe that’s part of the reason the house was still on the market by the time we came along 😂

But up on the third floor, there’s this little nook that’s the perfect size for a TV and sofa. It’s our cozy little den zone.

I found a great mid-century credenza that gives the TV a place to live and the nook a purpose. Added in a deep sofa, velvet ottoman, an old quilt, and here we are.

We have a large magnolia tree in our front yard that you can see right outside the windows, so the whole space feels a little like a treehouse. It also happens to be a great place for all those plants.

I don’t share much of the spaces in our home that we haven’t renovated yet, but I’m trying to change that. I want to share more of our home and how we actually live in it, including the spaces that are still evolving.

I have a type.

After years of buying vintage, there are a few things I seem to come back to over and over again.

Original oil paintings, always. But I’m especially drawn to still lifes with a little more going on than a vase of flowers. Give me a textile draped across the table, fruit, a strange vessel or some other little detail that makes me want to keep looking.

Right now, I’m especially obsessed with studio pottery lamps. Really, sculptural lighting in general, but give me a big handmade ceramic lamp and I’m probably going to find a place for it.

Burlwood anything. I love a simple, classic piece of furniture where that wild, beautiful wood grain gets to do all the work.

And the human form. Hands, busts, female figures, oversized heads. Especially when they’re handmade, sculptural and just a little quirky.

A good hand-knotted rug. I’m less drawn to the traditional red and blue colorways and much more likely to fall for something deeply saturated and highly patterned. A beautiful old Sarouk or Lillihan will get me every time.

Interesting trays. Wood, brass, ceramic, woven, whatever. I love them on coffee tables and tabletops for giving all the little things you collect a place to live.

A little progress report from The Meridian.

I had a site visit this week and we’re at that fun point where you can really start to see the direction of these rooms, even though there is still SO much to do.

The layouts and general design direction were figured out quite some time ago. Now I’m collecting and sourcing the exact right pieces for the exact right places. Some are vintage, some are custom, some are semi-custom, and a few are so unique and special I can’t even begin to describe them in words.

With an old house in particular, highlighting the architecture is central to my work. The vintage dining table I selected mimics the woodwork in the dining room. The coffee table mimics the original door handles and andirons. The stone of the console table picks up the stone in the fireplace surround. None of those things match, but they all feel like they belong together, in this house.

I see it as my job to highlight the beauty of a home, make it functional for the family living there during this chapter, and help homeowners be good stewards of old houses for whoever gets to love them next.

There’s still a lot coming. In the dining room, I’m toning down some of the formality of the architecture with woven elements. A custom lacquered credenza will break up some of the woodwork, an incredible abstract painting is being framed, and we still have paint and plenty of layering to do.

In the living room, we envisioned a pair of matching wine-colored velvet sofas and we got just that! I went semi-custom here so we could get the look we wanted at a price point and durability level that made sense for a family with two dogs. Vintage sconces, additional lighting, window coverings, sculpture and all those final layers will come with time.

I want to share more projects at this stage because this is actually such a huge part of the design process. Good design doesn’t happen all at once, and when you’re sourcing vintage and making custom pieces, sometimes you have to wait for the right thing to show up.

And baby, it takes time.

Who knew this quilt would look so good anywhere it lands in my house. And I haven’t even started restoring it yet.

Sometimes a piece is just meant for you. That was definitely the case when I stumbled across this crazy quilt from the 30/40s. It needs quite a bit of love, but I have already been using it as my sofa blanket, so naturally it’s been following me all over the house.

I’m headed to ScrapsKC this afternoon to pick up some thread and embroidery supplies so I can finally start working on her. Wish me luck. 🤎

The Marketplace goddesses blessed me with this one ✨

I fully intended to sell this painting when I picked it up, but then I leaned it against the wall in my office and… well… it lives here now.

Apparently all I needed to finally tackle the office refresh that’s been sitting on my list for months was one very large, very unexpected piece of art. Fresh paint and a new light fixture coming next.
